I am getting close to putting glass in my 40 Dodge pickup windshield so i tried to find any tips to help me in the search section and did not find any. If anybody has any tips to help me it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Mudder53
The Modern windshields are held in place using very strong adhesive, but not too long ago they were installed using only the rubber holding the glass in place. It was a good system, and ultimately easier to replace a damaged windshield. The hardest part of this installation was getting the rubber windshield gasket to pop over the lip of the car body so it would hold the windshield firmly in place. This is where the soapy string comes in and it's simply a string drenched in soapy solution. And it works. Install the glass in the rubber then rap the string around the inside lip of the rubber,,it helps to have a extra set of hands,,one on the outside gently pressing the glass into position and the other person inside with the two ends of the string side by side,,gently pull in on one side of the string and it will lift the edge of the rubber up and over the metal lip of the car/truck,,and just keep going until it is installed. Thank you for the reply but in my case the rubber is a u shape that sits in the frame. I don't know if i should put the rubber in the frame then try to put the glass in it or put the rubber on the glass and try to put them in at the same time. It is a split windshield frame with two piece glwss with a center divider. If i put the rubber in the frame it don't look like enough room for the glass. I got the correct rubber from Robert's Motor Parts.
Thank you NONAME. I just checked and i am not sure he sent me the right rubber. I have a piece of the old one and it measures 5/16s across the bottom and the new one is 7/16s. The sides of the new one is twice as thick as the old one. I don't think age would make that much of a difference.
