I'm getting ready to install a new windshield and a new rubber seal in my '53. What sealant, if any, should be used between the rubber seal and the metal frame of the car that surrounds the windshield?

As far as I know , none , BUT A little silicon will make things slid easier and will seal up any uneven metal from water !

It is the front windshield, but I presume it would apply to the rear window as well.

You shouldn't have to use anything.

For those of you who have not gotten your hands on the Ford Shop Manual which is the best money you will spend on your project($29.95 on CD at ebay) Here is what must be done, apply rubber cement(now days 3M sealer) to both sides of the gl***,if you have the stainless trim it must be installed into the seal before installing the seal onto the gl***,let it set up before installing the windshield.

I agree with Jeff, everyone should have a Ford Shop Manual, just beware that there are some mistakes in them.

I would agree on the Shop Manual too. I just picked up a paper back from C&G the other day, and it was a great help on day one.
