Picked up this NOS winged Ford emblem over the weekend. Never saw one before and dont know what it fits. Could even be aftermarket but the emblem sure does not look like it. It is NOS with perfect chrome and is 15" wide. The only thing I could think it might fit was a COE truck? In case you are wondering...I may sell it but sure would like to ID it first. Can anyone help? Ever see one of these before? Thanks in advance! CD
I'd read the instructions on the bottom of the box, and see what they say to mount it on. Is that emblem circa 1956ish?
The center emblem part is stock Ford, the wings are aftermarket. If it lays totally flat it goes on the trunk, if it's got a slight vee to it it's for the hood. It's an accessory item to add to your stock hood or trunk emblem. I think they were marketed to fit 50-54 Ford cars, depending on which one you have there.
No factory Ford in the 50s came equipped (in the US anyway) with a set of wings like that. Squablow has it right. Aftermarket (likely licensed through Ford) accessory much as your ruby-festooned mud flaps, spreader tailpipe extensions and propellers for the hood. Lots of ancillary items were marketed after the war...guys that bought them but never opened the boxes are now dribbling them out on the various auction sites. Those that bought them and used them were the 'hep-cats' of the early 50s. Even with their fedoras and cufflinks. When I was a kid (grade school), our neighbor had all kinds of geegaws on his Buick...aftermarket connie kit, twin antennas with flags fluttering, extra chrome gravel guards all over, rocket things on the tops of the front fenders, foglights on bumper, visor on windshield, spotlight with mirror, silly hubcaps, and I don't remember much else. Car looked like a traveling clown show.
Remember Ford built aircraft too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Trimotor Even built B-24 Liberators under contract.
