Winter Project Picture

  1. I started one of my winter projects. The hood on my delivery had a chrome bull nose with a black painted emblem. I am going to shave them both off and repaint the hood, fenders and grill. I've also planned some other work on the rear of the delivery and some dress up on the motor. But I'll stick with one thing at a time. I've certainly learned that it is real easy to overload my plate with these little modification. You know how it works.... All of a sudden its spring and I'm still working on my "winter" project !! for someone that needs to do his hood, can you give some info on how you tackled the seam.. are you peaking it or just flat?

  3. The seam is being slowly tack welded with a mig. Then it will be ground down slowly with a cloth type grinding wheel. I haven't decided if it will be peaked or flat, but probably flat. [IMG]

After ruining a perfect '49 ford hood by welding a 50 chevy pickup center strip down the middle [and warping the living***** outa it] I did a little research to find the best way to do this procedure with a mig welder.
The big boys say if you leave the flanges on both halves and simply weld down the middle like you're doing, there will be no way to shring/stretch out any warpage and you'll have to use filler to fix it. Also, you can't get behind the warpaed section with a hammer of dolly with that double flange hanging down, getting in your way. It seems the accepted method is to simply cut the flanged center out of the hood and replace it with a flat strip of 18-20 gage. Weld it in [slowly] with that soft body-working mig wire and do your grinding and shrinking/stretching to get it close...finish with a thin skim coat of filler...
After I found this out, I just got another hood and ran it with the center trough open [ford's a little different than your chevy] Whan I bought my 50 chevy delivery, I left the stock center strip in place....Too much work for me!
That said, I'm sure everybody has a different method of attacking this problem and since I didn't follow through on my hood, I really can't say what's best...only what the big boys say..Keep us posted..
