I love this thing! Any updates?

Just thinking out loud here, but what about trimming the exhaust pipes to sit flush with the hood sides?

Thanks Neil for the follow up,
now I guess you can understand my delay!
    The thing about the hood,
is this will probably be an outside car.
    I've only got a 2 car garage,
and right now it's better to have a project in one side.
    Also,
the hood kinda changes the whole look from hot rod to custom,
as the side profile totally changes,
or just doesn't have to be imagined.
Of course this also entails alot of slicing to do on that stock hood!
This is probably more thought than I've put into it,
as really this was simply just too good a deal to find in my neighborhood to say no to!

I'm really good at making exhausts that exit right by the driver and passengers ears.
If I can get it running someday,
I'll have to figure out how bad it's going to be,
than adjust the ends to suit.
Or just sell it to TexasSpeed!
Also the hood isn't full time so it's a tricky decision.

So here's my end of year update.
    It's not that much,
and it's not something to brag about!
A while back I had to mix up a batch of that epoxy.
I planned on having a little excess,
so beforehand I got the DA out and sanded the rear a bunch.
The bumps and bruises were even more obvious,
so after a month or two,
    I did some hammering,
    and through on some filler.
Yeah I did it I admit.
It's not too thick but it is massive!
the main thing is it's way smoother with the 2nd coat of epoxy.
Still got to sand the roll marks out!

    So here's a little update.
I've tried to focus on the green 40,
but sometimes doing the mechanical stuff isn't as fun as grinding metal.
I had the perfect little project waiting.
This was the perfect donor piece.
It saved a bunch of time as the fit was almost just right.
Didn't take long to rough in a cleaner shape.
The only tricky part were these divots.
I experimented with some 309 TIG rod and it blended very smoothly.
Jumped the gun and threw some paint on it,
than ruined it hammering it on to the column.
A bunch of rattle can layers later and it looked like it was found in a junk pile.
    Good fit!
A while back I mixed up some brown primer and rolled it on.
So now if I can finish a couple little projects on the green 40,
I'll swap the spaces and have this one in the garage.
Than I can finish the little bit of sheetmetal welding.

    Here's a long awaited update!
The kids and I pulled it out of the side yard,
and got the van stuck between the neighbors garage.
It would have been easy to push it back,
but we just used the old jack sliding trick.
From here it's hard to see,
but there's a bunch of unfinished welding and gap issues.
Now the TIG can reach the car.
It sat in the alley spot for a month before I got my act in gear.
Here you can see the messed up spots on the door, the big chop seams and right above the decklid.
This is like the only shit I see sometimes,
and it's been bugging the heck out of me.
    After 4 years,
it only took about 3 or 4 hours to weld up those spots.
There was definitely a synergy going on it was like I was on autopilot.
    Basically it was tig hammer-welded,
    so there's a weld-hammer-weld hammer rhythm going.
The inside is almost as smooth as the outside.
Now if I ever get to work on car that's not rusty...!

The one issue I did have was with the door top.
There was some serious gap filling if you compare the pictures.
The door top kinda wedges thicker to the back now,
but i'll have to accept that for now.

This all happened over a couple early evenings,
and out here it'll get windy in the middle of the day.
I've got this custom windscreen to help out in those situations.
Here's a before on what's been bugging me all these years.
Remember this was a rough chop when there was a partial shell on a makeshift dolly!
This corner was the one with the big dent.
There are still some crease marks visible above the cut line.
Now it's almost presentable as is.
Funny I never noticed that little dent right inbetween the rear windows!

Anyway that's my progress as of Sunday evening.
The main welding left is the long stretch of patch panel on the passenger door.
Once that's done I want to flip it around and tackle the hood.

You're doing an awesome job on this car! I'm normally a fan of unchopped '40 coupes but yours looks soooooo good!

Hey guys thanks for all the interest and comments.
You know each one is appreciated and gives that momentum!

    Here's a quickee update.
Rallied up and beat the wind with the wind block...
Now I remember why this wasn't welded up.
    I'm a right handed hammerer!
Had to slow it down a bit but got the hang of it again.
    [IMG][/URL]
Finished up just in time for dinner!

A little grinding left to do,
but I think the hood may get chopped up this weekend...

Very rarely do you see a modern chop on this type of coupe, where the qtr window
isn't completely out of whack.......You did a FINE job on this....like it was done years
ago....You should be very proud of your work..it is OUTSTANDING !!!!
