So what have I done in the year and 3 months its been tucked away.
-installed a front spring - had a chunk of angle iron to get home!
-installed these cool SS axle pins
    [IMG]
-fit some shock mounts but couldn't figure out if I wanted them front or rear.
-got a fuel tank from my cousins '36 which fit perfect.

    Yep.
    That's about it.

    But now its back...
    Stay tuned!

I am happy to say that after a month and a week,
    of sitting patiently outside,
the 40 is now inside the shop.

I was juggling going to VLV,
but its weird when I'd rather spend the weekend working on this rust bucket!

    Thanks alot guys.
Its weird but your interest really helps motivate,
especially when deciding on throwing a couple hours
    in after work.

Last night I was at the shop,
and I'll admit there was a moment I lost my focus.
It's been so long waiting to be able to work on it properly,
    (with a welder etc)
that the ideas that grew from sitting in my house garage
clouded the reality of the original plan.

The worst part was my preoccupation with the new surface rust.
Sure the original sheetmetal was questionable to even start the project with,
and alot of the patch panels were made with not new sheetmetal,
but the salt air just seemed to attack it.

Since there is a ton of panel welding still left,
I started scouring the seams to get some shiny metal back.
It went quickly, but I got carried away.
The whole shop was a dusty mess, even with the blower on.

I left the shop after midnight,
thinking of "ospho-ing" the body later on,
and maybe throwing some marine epoxy primer on it.
    Maybe some bondo later on.
The justification was I live in San Diego, tons of salty fog...

Well today I snapped out of it and got back on the original track.
I tested a small panel with some spray oil,
    and next thing I knew,
almost the whole car was oiled up.
I used a scouring pad and scrubbed away.
    The rusty metal loved it,
it was like a sponge, oil soaking into the roots of the rust.
    And no dust!
Just wiped off the browned oil with a rag.

    Yes,
    I'm a hack,
but I wish I had done this last year!
The thing is I like the look of old non-chromed tools,
with that oiled surface rust patina.
And if I did paint it,
It would need the faux patina just to hide the dents still in it,
this thing is far from perfect.
This thing was supposed to be a beater race car looking hot rod!
I already have a nice 40 that would actually love a real paint job anyway!

The best part is with the oil,
paint is not an option any time soon.
Which helps me to focus on the real priorities.

So now the goal is to finish all the unwelded seams.
Today it was about 3 feet.
Yeah, there's alot you don't see in these little pictures!

    More to come...
Hopefully more work and not as much rambling.

    Awesome man... It's looking good!
It takes balls to cut up a '40 Coupe and make it look right. I think you have a good eye, 'cause it sure looks good to me!

    Got some work done...

    bunch of patch panels.

    Just like new.

(I did the other side too but it wasn't as exciting as this one)

Also started on that missing back piece.

that was what I got done today,
still alot of welding and some tapping to do.

There's actually a lip hammered in that follows the decklid.

So I can add a water catch or something later on,
also makes it alot more stiff.

Also worked on the firewall hole.
The distributor is in the back there.
I would love to put a crab in the front, or something like it,
even a crank trigger or something.
    Hmm.

    got the tunnel part rolled,
    [IMG]

And hammered a cowl to firewall thing.
Didn't grind it inside but painted it anyway!

Now the cowl is stiff enough to get the hinges figured out for the doors,
even though the doorjamb itself is nonexistent.
    Sigh.

I used some temporary weld-on hinges to figure out the door pivots,
so at least there's a starting point.
    They'll be hidden-hinged like a street rod!

    More soon!

    TP

    Oh yeah,
    this is the lite version,
if you're bored and want to see more inbetween steps,
    with some musical interludes...
    http://perichbrothers.blogspot.com/search/label/tres huevos
    exciting chit.
