Technical WINTERS CHAMP HD 10" AXLE & BRAKE INSTALL - NEED ADVICE

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 31chevymike, Sep 19, 2017.

  1. I mentioned earlier that these Currie drum brake ***emblies are completely ***embled and simply bolt on. What I ALMOST screwed up was placing the backing plate ***embly on the correct side with the emergency brake cable plug facing the front of the rear. Appreciate your advice!

  2. I will use petroleum grease to the bearings and gears as well in the gear case. Also noticed that some of these aluminum high nuts on the gear cover are roughed up from dis***embly before shipping this QC to me. I'm going to go with tall STEEL nuts from Summit Racing in due time.

  3. Does anyone know on a 5 on 4.75 Chevy lug pattern what size are the lug nuts from the Currie axles? The axle studs have a fine thread. Appreciate any info! 20170922_205458.jpg

  5. Okay, appreciate that info, I'll run to the auto parts to grab some lug nuts!

  6. They were WAY too small. Called Curry Axles and after looking up my thread on his end here on the HAMB seeing the close up of the wheel studs, said they are 1/2"-20.

    Mike,
Do yourself a favor. Buy a set of digital calipers and thread pitch gauge.

Folks on here are willing to help but because so many times modifications are made to standard parts (kind of the definition of hotrodding) you will get wrong information.

Something you should learn and need to know is how to determine bolt sizes. Diameter and thread pitch, SAE and Metric.

    Just trying to help,

    Bruce

  8. I'll definitely look into it Bruce. My tool collection has just begun, willing to perform most of the 3rd restoration myself. My next equipment purchase will be a 120 volt mig welder - soon I will start my own thread on my rebuild here on the HAMB!

  9. There are several versions of plastic nut and bolt gauges available online and most nut and bolt supply stores have them as well. About $10.

Just picked the same rear and need to do the same mod to it. Thanks!
Photos with it under your car?

  12. Wow! Started this thread over 8 years ago - thinking that it would only help me with the ***embly... I would love to tell you how exciting and noisy that this exceptional rear will be once I finally get her on the road... Was hoping for this Fall for the "Run to the Sun" 4 day event this October 16 - 19th here in Lake Havasu City, AZ, but my non-employment for over 5 months just killed that idea. I am very happy and proud to say that 2025 is my 30th Anniversary of ownership! If she's not on the road this year, it will be definitely 2026 for sure!!!!

If I'm looking at your earlier pictures correctly the backing plates are on the wrong sides.

Short shoes always go forward, the adjuster cables always go to the back, can't see shoe length real well but definitely see the adjusters and cables are definitely wrong sides....

  14. Gotta remember, this thread was eight years ago brother, and a HAMBER answered me yesterday about just purchasing this same Winters QCR and wanted to see my quick change hung in my ch***is with a few photos, which I did. Believe me, I got a good laugh then for making this dumb error...

In fact, since my garage was too small in width, I coudn't take out the axles and the backing plates until I found Dale from running an ad here about trying to locate an experienced and talented welder/fabricator to strengthen my ch***is, mock up my hemi with a PAYIR block and so forth. That was in January of 2023 and could not tell Dale enough on how grateful I was with my ch***is the way it looks right now!

I just wanted to clarify incase a year from now someone pulls this thread up for either information or references.

I hate finding a thread that has info in it I either want or need and find it's either incomplete or turns out to be in error...

    ;-)
