I have a Winters quick change rear, one of the older ones that went into dirt track cars. As typical, the center secrion contains a spool. I want to convert it to a "posi"style. Will an automotive or truck rear internals work, or do I have to buy a very expensive Winters or Frankland unit? Currently this thing has 3/4 ton Ford truck axles, but I could install the 31 double spline axles and caps if something like a 9 inch locker would fit it. Thanks, S
Nope, the 9" stuff won't fit. You can buy a brand new Detroit Locker for your Winters for about $650, so I'd say a used one will run you about half that. Keep an eye on EBay, and cruise around for a local asphalt late model stock car forum, those guys will generally have lockers and ratchets to sell come season's end. Make sure you inspect it very well though, as race car parts seldom lead a happy life.
Expect to pay between two and three hundred for a good diff on ebay. Look for units like a gold track, winters track, true track, stuff like that. They are newer worm gear types that work bitchn and don't pop and bang like a locker. If you order a catalog from Winters, they have a whole section on how to set up your rear end. A bit imtimidating if you have never done it, but, very simple once you get into it. I did mine in an afternoon. Nuttin to it. Heres mine. Holler if you need any help. -Abone.
The final drive-pinion to ring gear- in EVERY quick change is similar to (identical to) an early Ford banjo or a late '40s/early '50s 3/4 ton rearend: the pinion meets the ring gear on center. There are NO late model rear ends built this way-they're all hypoid. The only ring gear carrier (that will work) you'll find will be either a stock original or an after market specialty item.
