I was watching Vice Grip Garage and he has a wipe on clear coat that he sells. What's your opinion? It sure would make clear coating a previously painted car alot easier. vicegripgarage.com

Nail polish. Not saying it is, just that that stuff comes in a brush on clear coat. Self leveling. Goes on smooth and dries quick. Multitude of colors.

If you check out vehicle detailing forums that are the domain of some very strange OCD folks i am surprised to see they get the OK. Its a temporary coating that seems to get good results is applied correctly.

  4. Is that the same as the ceramic coating you hear about?

Not sure if it is the same product you are speaking of? Shine juice?
    A replacement for linseed oil.
Something I will never need to use. But I did get a good laugh from DD speed shop when they did a video on using it. Compared it side by side with linseed oil ... shine juice looks to be good stuff,

While the car fits here, it does have a engine that does not ... pretty sure they did not lift the hood in video though .... I apologize in advance if it needs deleted.

IMG_7550.JPG IMG_7547.JPG Dries in 60 seconds, faster if you shine it with some UV radiation. For the save the patina crowd.

No, this stuff is not the same as a ceramic coating. Ceramic coatings are a SiO2 (silicone dioxide) chemical. When you apply it it creates a hydrophobic barrier on the paint. So water will bead up when it gets wet. It also has benefits of protecting the paint from “industrial fallout”. Meaning oil from a car in front of you, bird poop, stuff like that will come off easy. It will not protect from scratches or dings. Typically, they will last 1-3 years. And there is some prep work that needs to be done before applying.

Your welcome. When we got the wife a new OT car, I ended up going down a rabbit hole with detailing and paint protection.

Los-Control, thats linseed oil mixed with other stuff I believe. The stuff I'm wondering about is called Wipe on Clearcoat.

  11. Patina implies normal wear, a lived-in look. Preserve it...
Rust is the heavy oxidation of bare metal... Put some fucking paint on it!
Even a so-so paint job looks better than a rust bucket!

But linseed oil not only shines, it helps raise HDL & decrease LDL. So you should re-consider. The only side-effect is that it attracts insects especially wood ants..

  13. Many time these products are just regular Clear coat. Wiped on with rag or foam brush. Mix any urethane clear with activator thin out 5-10% and wipe on.
If you want a Matt finish (which look much better than Gloss over rust) then use a Matt agent or a Matt clear.
Everyone has their preference, linseed oil is just that a oil. Sticky, stinky and messy at times.
If done to protect an original paint or historic vehicle looks great. To take a multi colored primer 3 coats of blue then sand to primer to make it look worn. not a big fan. Spend the time and make it look like it’s your Show car even if it is done 1 panel at a time.

    :)
These preservatives or whatever are not designed to replace the clear coat on BC/CC.
There are several different products to add “shine” just visit any used car lot
But I dig old sun faded rusty crap as much as nice paint.
I’ll be using these snake oil products to preserve the “lazy” on a couple of my rides.

A lot of these “Patina Sauce” products are pretty much to exactly only Thompsons Water Seal and similar products repackaged and sold for a tidy profit. Don’t know what the “wipe on” clear is, but there is no shortcut on body/paint refinishing and protection. I’m not against it, I just wouldn’t use it. Any of it.

As far as the boiled linseed oil and thinner goes I don’t think it works. My kid put it on his patina Rambler, it looked ok for about two days and then it was right back to the dull finish.

  19. We used straight linseed oil on black epoxy.
    2-3 times a year.
    Worked well.
    I’ve never thinned it.
I plan to experiment with penetrol on aged paint soon.

  20. Ugh. Not a fan of this look. Watching the original video, he/Derek the vice grip guy even got out a spray gun and masked off the roof...if you are going to all that trouble might as well da sand then shoot eBay enamel on it.....

    "Dries in 30 seconds."

Hope bugs don't land on it.

I guess you could wipe the bugs off after it dries.
    Except for the legs.

Broke Bastard Garage on YouTube has his own mixture with linseed oil and said he applies it only every six months.

interesting stuff - whatever floats your boat - but, shiny rust does not look right - ceramic coating is a true plus if you have a good paint job

”Can you blame a guy” from making a buck from what his viewers are asking about? “I don’t know” but I did see it on the tube last night. It’s not for me but I think it’s marketing genius on his part.

Lol. I think the legs wipe off, it's the feet and toes. Unless those bugs wear boots, then that get's left behind and the foot slides out.

Boiled degummed linseed oil and pumice, great for rubbing out a shellac finish on furniture, just never figured anyone would use it on a car. Oh well, live and unlearn...
