so the wipers in my '62 pontiac have gotten a workout this year already, and they stoped workin'!!they will come on by themselves from time to time when i leave the switch in the ON position. but i cant turn them off once they go on,its a 2 speed switch with the squirter ****on in the middle.i can change the speed, but not turn 'em off. i have to pull over and disconect the power to the wiper motor..i have a spare switch that i tried to day but no luck..so what do ya'll figure is the problem?how can i fix it?is it a bad ground?lemme know,,,,thanks...craig

The park switch (located inside the gear housing) is bad...

I wonder if the wire to the switch has a short. All the switch does is complete the ground. Next time it happens, try wiggling the wires to the switch and see if it quits.

Yeah, it's the park switch. Probably not even bad, likely just stuck in some petrified forty year old grease. It's inside the motor ***embly, and is much like a set of ignition points--get to it, free it up and grease it, clean its contacts, and you'll be home free.
The why of this: Your wiper has TWO power leads, one that is switched on/off by the dash switch, the other constantly hot. When you turn off the wipers, the extra wire keeps them on until they reach their lowest position, at which point a cam on the drive works the park switch and shutserdown. Utterly baffling until you know the thing's in there.
