Anybody know what this wheel came of of? 16" with a 5 on 5.5 bolt circle. Its got a pentagon shaped center hub
Here are a couple of restored Model A wheels turned into 16 inch probably during WW II. Charlie Stephens
^^^ I found a set of A wheels made up like that in a stack of 16 inch wires I saw in a barn. I had never seen anything like it. The ones I saw looked scary and not road worthy. It's amazing what some people come up with.
It look like a Kelsey Hayes bent spoke that some one cut the center out of . they where welded I have 6 0r 7 that look the same except for the center hole . they also made 40 and 36 spoke wheels . if it has a raised block where the valve stem is it should be 4.5 wide if not it should be 4 in.
Hey, lodaddyo, I've got one the same and just asked the same question as you . . . with the same results! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/identify-this-wire-wheel.1009450/#post-11395615 Mine was in a 'set' of Ford wires that included a 17" one, a half-decent '35 Ford one and one that I concluded was probably a cut-down 17" or 18" wheel, in a similar vein to Charlie Stephens' and Binger's finds. And that one is probably not road-worthy either.
Just read your post about the wheel, thats aweosme, what do you think they came off of? Aftermarket wheel maybe?
Still none the wiser about these. Had a suggestion of Budd in my thread, but they didn't look quite the same. Shame there's a few thousand miles of water in the way or we could get them together and make the start of a set! UPDATE: After thinking about what Wheelkid said in his reply I realised I have some Model A wheels here to compare 'ours' with. I thought he was referring to the ones Charlie Stephens posted, but when looking at the back of the Model A wheel you can see the pentagonal shape. Seems an awful lot of work to get a 16" wheel, but the fact that two have turned up a few thousand miles apart and look almost identical suggests that somewhere there was a factory turning these out?
