I would like some suggestions about rewiring my 50 merc. The wiring is all factory and in typical condition. I plan to keep it 6 volt, current plan is to use this https://shoebox-central.com/6-volt-modern-universal-wiring-harness has anyone used this harness? I figure I'll buy every harness that shoebox sells for the car and adapt everything to work. I'll admit that I'm an electrical idiot which is why im asking for opinions. I have switched what I have over to LEDs, still waiting for more bulbs and harnesses to show up to complete this transition.

My brakes... every single thing is new with them except the drums and the springs. They're adjusting correctly and they still have me concerned if ever I'm in a panic stop situation. They work just fine if I'm in a predictable situation. Is there anything I can do to make these better short of putting rotors on the front? Or am I going to have to live with it?

I have no plans to restore this car, the body is too far gone but it's good enough to keep as a slow cruiser. It's a survivor and I'm trying to keep it as close to stock as possible while being safe and reliable. Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Shoe Box Central is an outstanding vendor. The harness you are looking at is a Rebel kit and their products are top notch. FYI: Rebel is an Alliance vendor. Regardless of where you purchase the kit Rebel tech support will guide you through any issues. I've installed 2 of their 12 volt kits and I'm very happy with them. JMO

@REBEL43 builds that harness for shoebox central. Rebel Wiring has a good reputation.

Your brakes should be fine. You get used to leaving enough following distance.

Thanks guys! I'll be purchasing the kit and doing this over the winter.
I've put quite a few miles on it now. I'm not going to say it's not as bad as it looks but structurally there is nothing concerning enough to not drive it.

Back in the day, it was a level playing field. Every car of the era pretty much stopped the same. Now we share the road with cars that are astronomically advanced. I opted for front discs on my Ford and they saved me a couple of times.

I've had a little bit to think about this. I'm not seeing a down fall to switching it to a 12 volt system. Is there a go to system specifically designed for a 50 merc? I've come across quite a few conversion. I have roughly $1,200 put aside just for this portion of the project. Help me spend my money on quality.

You should be able to do it for way less, if you buy an alternator, runtz voltage drops for gauges, and 12 volt bulbs. The starter and horn will be fine on 12 volts.
