Hey I was considering installing a new wiring harness system on my 1955 chevy truck just thought I would ask to see what kind you guys have installed and been happy with.

Several outfits sell a repop for your system. I've helped a few guys install them. They cost a bit more than the universal ones but I like them better because they fit.

Personally, except for a system that is causing me problems, I don't completely re-wire anything. If the lights are giving me problems, for example, I run complete new wire in the affected circuit. Everything else, I leave alone.

I looked at Rebel- even contacted them. Their harness looks like every other pre-terminated pre-packaged one size fits all fuse block out there.

Nothing wrong with that but I like the ability to remove a section of wire if I want or need to. AAW is probably twice as much but it meet my needs.

I'm not a fan of colored wire so all the stuff that you could see was placed inside this braid & shrink wrapped on ends.

where do you get that braided stuff? I hate the plastic plit loom with a p***ion and this just looks amazing in comparison!

  8. Another plug for Rebel. I did my first wiring job with one of their 9+3 kits and I had NO PROBLEMS. Believe me that says alot. Todd

  9. Any parts house can get it. I did the last car with stuff from Carquest. Comes by the foot and in several diameters.

There's 4-5 sizes & it's pretty cheap. I think I spent $40 for enough to do the car 3 times. I didn't want to run out. Painless sells a hard split braid that's expensive as hell (about the price of a cheap harness). but you can install it after you are done. This stuff is nylon braid (think chinese finger puzzle) & you have to fish the wires as you go & shrink wrap the ends. Looks a whole lot better than plastic split loom. I was worried about cutting it, as they cut w/ a hot wire. If you cut with scissors, it will fray & unravel. So I went cheap, put a cheapo metal putty knife in a vice & heated it w/ a propane torch. Cuts like ****er. I was surprised the walls didn't fuse together but they don't.
You can call these guys & have them mail you out some.

Here's one of the runs w/ multiple connections. Takes some pre-planning.

The flash makes the red wire show through. I later re-did it & shrink wrapped the whole run 1st, then installed the sleeve. Red seems to be the only color that shows through the braid.

I used a factory repop harness for my '55 chevy truck. It was $200. But I didn't have to crimp a single connection or buy anything extra like terminal connectors. Another bonus is that everything is run to the proper length, groups of wires are already routed together, and everything is taped up like factory. Zero headaches. The extra money spent is more than made up for in convenience.

Several of the catalog places sell them, like LMC. I got mine at a local place, Dixie Truckworks. PM me if you need any help when you go to do it. I went from an electrical novice to an expert, lol. :D

I used EZ Wiring mini 12 for my 27.
No issues in 4 years so far.
Was inexpensive and idiot proof, nice compact design.

As a universal harness the Rebel is great. If your not sure you want to crimp all the ends and such look at the American Auto wire for your 55 truck. Upgrade to the modern fuse block.
Very easy to install. However the cost is about double. You get new ign switch and headlight switch. Roughly 475. My two cents

I rewired my '58 using a basic repop harness from Cl***ic Parts except for an alternator instead of a generator. It was inexpensive and installed easily with all of the connectors that I needed etc. I'm not exactly an electrical genius so the fact that it was an easy install is saying something.

I bought it about 4 years ago and I think it cost me about $150. I finally installed it a few months ago. Easy install and no problems. keep in mind, this was a harness just like the original with no fuse panel etc.

If you're going to be adding a big ol' stereo and halogen lights or other high draw accessories I would go with a universal harness with a fuse panel.

Thanks for the information I have narrowed it down to a factory re-pop for convience on my part as an electrical novice. American wire and tuckers have the same harness that comes with the ignition switch and light switch which I could use both.
    Thanks
