I need some help. I thought I had a pretty good idea of how to wire everything on my 49 Chevy 3100, but it's not as clear as I thought it would be. I'm using a rebel harness and switching to 12 volts. I'm hoping someone here can provide some insight and get me going in the right direction. In the engine bay: alternator wire goes to terminal on alt exciter wire goes to #1 on alt make a jumper from #2 on alt to terminal on alt coil wire goes to + on coil solenoid wire goes to starter which also has the + terminal from the battery Now, theres an ign sw start wire that I'm not sure about. Under the dash, I have the following: coil ign sw power ing sw start ign sw acc (2 wires, 1 orange, 1 brown) There are more wires for ignition, but I'm guessing I don't need to use them. the starter switch is a 3 post unit and on the back, it is divided into 3 sections - 1 for each terminal. The top terminal is stamped with ACC, the left is coil and right is amm. I'm guessing the coil wire goes to the coil post on the switch, and since I'm not running an ammeter, maybe the ign sw power goes to the amm terminal. Then one of the acc wires goes to the acc post, but which? I'm using a points distributor, so I know I also need to get a ballast resistor wired up. If you can make some sense of this, I'd appreciate it.
How big is this wire? (solenoid wire goes to starter which also has the + terminal from the battery) I am thinking this wire is the battery feed for ignition switch/headlight switch, etc. and it should go to the big terminal on the solenoid. These wires should go as follows: ign sw power --- to 12V on fuse block , cigarette lighter, or headlight switch ing sw start --- to S terminal on solenoid ign sw acc (2 wires, 1 orange, 1 brown) -- orange to radio, etc. brown to idiot lamp for charging. Other side of idiot lamp should be exciter wire goes to #1 on alt. (This harness may be using the ACC terminal for excitation of alternator)
solenoid wire should go to the S terminal on the starter solenoid, and the other end connects to the Start terminal on the ign switch. I think the AMM connection on the ignition switch is the battery power in, that would connect to the big terminal on the starter solenoid, which connects to the + side of the battery.
The solenoid wire is thicker than the other wires (head light or turn signals) The starter only has 1 terminal
Do you have the original engine in it? if so then ignore what I said before....you will not use the Solenoid wire, but you will connect the ignition switch Battery (Amm?) terminal to the big terminal on the starter. and you can connect a ballast resistor in series with the coil + wire, but to get the byp*** working you'll need a newer starter switch, which may be rather involved...since the 12v switch might not fit on the 6v starter, and you can't change the starter to a 12v without also changing the flywheel.
yeah the engine is a 216 - so that sw ign start goes to the single terminal on the starter? But it sounds like I've got bigger problems with the coil and resistor.
no, if you are using the orignal foot pedal starter, you do NOT connect the ign switch Start terminal to anything
sorry mis-read your last post squirrel - the ignition switch amm terminal gets wired to the starter terminal.
