    Good Morning All,

I got a speedway motors GM universal keyed steering column and of course, no instructions... I have seen lots of info on how to wire the turn signals, horns, etc. I'm good with that.

But I am wondering how to wire the ignition switch and neutral safety switch portion. I found 2 documents/plug sets, 1 from painless performance and 2nd from Flaming River. I have taken a photo of my plug and drawn arrows for what each manufacturer says to do for the wiring.

I notice 2 main differences: 1st: Painless gives power to BAT plug 2 and 3 but Flaming River appears to give power to BAT plug 1 and 3. The 2nd difference is Painless has accessory in bottom right but Flaming River has Ignition (jumped from top left).

Does anyone know which wire setup will work with the speedway GM universal steering column?

Also for the neutral safety switch, do I go out of start solenoid on steering column plug, into neutral safety switch, then out of neutral safety switch and to start solenoid?

  2. That plug looks like the one GM used in the late 60's.
If you don't get the wiring info here, try the Nova or Chevelle web gathering sites for info.

Does this help or more confusion?
I'd look up a basic GM wiring diagram, since they designed it to begin with.
The rod aftermarket just uses the common, solid stuff and adapts it.
Do you have a PRNDL switch on the column or neutral/reverse on the trans?
EDIT: just checked and there were 14 returns for Speedway GM column. They have instructions for each, do you have a part number?

LOST ANGEL and pprather like this.
  4. Been a long time that I hooked up a stock column switch; but I think either diagram would work for a basic acc/ign/start functions.

Easy enough to check each function with meter or powered test light to confirm.

Yes; start wire runs from ign switch thru neutral switch on it's way to starter solenoid.

Cool, thank you all for the info.

    part number: 91603281
Universal Keyed GM Tilt Steering Column With Shifter, 32" Chrome

the column has the shifter and gear inductor.

the image RodStRace put seems similar to the diagrams I’ve seen.

I’ll plug and play and test it out and see what happens :) still got to get the column installed but trying to think ahead

Thanks for the follow up. Speedway has 20 articles at the bottom of the page, including the turn signal wiring video. The PRNDL switch is mounted on the column, so that is your safety switch.

They should have videos on the PRNDL and the ignition switch too.
I would agree with squirrel, test before just plugging in the harness.
Match up color codes at the least.

G.M. made two different switches. One for straight column. One for Tilt Columns. Might help you out my friend. 50674B3E-6146-48B9-8375-1F9F3DBF331E (2).JPG

What he said... many people don't know that this IS the ignition switch. The thing where the key goes in is a mere anti-theft device.

I had to diagnose one on my sister's 1977 Impala, a friend talked me through it while on a land line phone. I had to keep running back n forth, good times.
