I finished wiring my gauges this morning and put the seat and steering column in...just mocking it up, it's been along time since I've had the seat and steering wheel in the car. What I realized after I did that was that when I moved my steering box forward to clear the headers and give me a little more room between me and the steering wheel I pretty much took away the room I need for my leg to fit between the clutch pedal the steering wheel...crap. So now I'm thinking I can 1) move the pedal over to the left by welding on a littel dog leg out of bar stock onto the original pedal (shaped like a backwards "L") but that'll put a big side load on everything when I put in the clutch. 2) Or i can cut the steering column and scab in a piece of round bar stock to get back that leg room. 3) Or I can put in a long collapsible steering column from Speedway..not sure how that all goes together, but sure I can make it work. is anyone aware of part that i can weld into the original column (choice number 2 above) and get the extra length I need AND get the collapsible safety feature? thanks Charlie
I would choose #1. I can't imagine a clutch so stiff that a welded offset in the pedal would be a problem. At least try the easy and cheap fixes first.
I think is try the clutch pedal mod before that!!!! Or was that sarcasm? Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
eh..i just checked and the steering wheel on there now has a 3.75" dish already....looking more like modifying the pedal is the way to go. It already looks like the clutch pedal arm is "bowed" in the direction of the column. Taking some of that out may pick me up an inch and a half...I dont know if that'll solve it completely but it's a start.
There were lots of pedals made offset to one side, so I don't see where it would be a problem as long as it travels straight instead of pushing sideways.
