So thank you no one is hurt . I’m own guns and shoot a lot . The area where I live is very hilly , meaning if a neighbor is hunting in pasture it is in a straight line to my house and garage . I have almost shot near a hunter , myself because of the terrain . I happened to see him just a split second before squeezing off the round . I have a collection of military rifles . The surplus ammo is different than hunting ammo , as in steel core copper coated projectiles . Hunting projectiles are lead copper coated and meant to expand . What I see happened at your place looks like surplus ammo , not a hunter . The rifles have a dangerous range of miles , not a property line . New Years Eve , usually involves a bit of partying and probably shooting of a gun to celebrate , these most never have a good outcome . I can remember collecting and shooting tracer rounds years ago one the eve . I had built a bunker to “ stop “ the rounds down range . The third or fourth tracer hit something and ricocheted straight up . I’m here to tell you 1st hand when they say dangerous for miles you better believe it . It burned straight up for miles , if a plane was in the area it could of very easily been struck . It just made me think also what goes up must come down , some where that steel core projectile hit the ground . Never again did I do it. I was shooting sighting in 3 hills away , some incendiary rounds . Set the dead grass a blaze . Uncle Sam didn’t have to pay to clear the area !

The largest deer in Ky , was killed where mine and my neighbors property join . I had seen him numerous times . I can not kill just for sport anymore after surviving stage 4 cancer . I allow hunting but I don’t hunt . Pests don’t do so well , if I see them . Sorry to rant but the gun thing , is something we all need to be reminded to be adults with from time to time .

I’m praying we all have a safe , and Happy New Year .

  5. Thanks Guys,

We ran the gamut from concise, common sense comments to hilarious ones & Myself like @twenty8 had trouble breathing when I read Dan @Sharpone 's comment about mounting the flower pot in response to @ekimneirbo story. @EDMAR'S GARAGE ...I wondered when someone would make that comment, because that IS the broadside!:D

Put the dowel (or in this case a brake line with the fitting cut off one end, because it was laying around) through the outer & inner wall along with through the hood. It is pretty clear that it could have only come from the neighbor next to my Mom & Dad as it lines up with just behind the corner of Mom & Dads house where (in the pic) you can see an A frame for a wooden swing. This means it came from behind the neighbors light yellow colored building ( about 400 ft away). When they do shoot they go back further into their back property & shoot a manure pile with a dirt mound behind it. I guess it is possible while carrying one of their guns carelessly with their finger on the trigger, it went off. I am completely sure this was not on purpose & I will pay them a visit in the near future to talk about it. I have a bit of work to finish up on the Nash & then I can move it along with the Toro & the open trailer out of the paint room to do a much more detailed search for the slug, but chances are I swept it up previously.

Pictures are crappy, because it was foggy with snow flurries in the air!

First 3 days of '25 are much better:p

    God bless

Glad you're OK man and that your new year is going better than last so far.

The only thing I'd add is that things like this piss me off for two reasons.
    1) Even if you have insurance for the damage, it's still a huge pain in the ass to have the hood repainted and repaired. If you have to do it yourself, then it's an enormous expenditure of your time and effort, not to mention money, because of someone else's careless mistake.
    2) I'm not a gun prude. I shoot and own guns, and am blessed to have enough property to shoot on myself. I fervently support the 2A and our right to bear arms. But "accidents" like this are preventable, and when someone gets hurt or killed by the careless conduct of someone with a firearm, it becomes fodder for those who wish to have those rights stripped away from the rest of us. For that reason and many more, I don't take gun safety lightly. This is not a political post and I feel the same way regarding reckless use of souped up cars. When someone does something irresponsible, people can get hurt and it's a reflection on everyone.

My sister-in-law and her son-in-law are coming by today. He wants to see if I can weld a steering part off a golf cart or something. He does taxidermy as a hobby.........I'll talk to him and see what I need.:D

Glad you figured out where it came from and that it probably wasn't done maliciously. If you have one, I'd put a laser bore sight on the end of your rod and see if you can find the point of discharge. The picture makes it look like the round was on an upward trajectory when it hit. If so that would most likely indicate either a skipped round off the ground or an accidental discharge from a dropped weapon. It wasn't a hunting round, based on the lack of expansion, so I'll go with option 2. Someone probably dropped the weapon and it went off. If the angle goes up slightly, then it was hand fired and someone was probably shooting at a critter of some sort. The irresponsible part was not following up to see where the round went. Suppose in the worse case that someone had been hit. If they didn't take responsibility and try to follow up, imagine what could have happened. And they should have been able to hear the round hit the metal building, so no excuse for not following up or owning what they did.

Bill, I'm sorry, but whoever did the shooting screwed up big time and I feel that they should be held accountable and be made to pay for the repairs! Luckily it is just a financial retribution, not a case of someone being injured or worse a loss of someones life.

Since the rod is in position to look n trace outside, may as well pull it in abit to trace the path inside. I'd kinda be surprised iffen you've swept it up already & never noticed it. Guessing it's buried in a wall or other object. Laser idea is nice, I gotta get me a few of those... Hope nothing else was damaged.

Oh, & ekimneirbo & Dan; comments like that are a reminder as to why I never read here anymore while taking a drink of coffee, since I'm told that monitors & esp keyboards aren't too happy being showered w/ hot coffee that's been blown out the nose... Which I'm also told hurts... ;) . I thank you for keeping it somewhat short, instead of a long-book-version like the European sh_t-pot-blender story, in which I hurt myself from laughing too hard & long... ;) . Still, all the humor is appreciated. At least it brightens up the day, & usually more than one... :D .

Yes laughter is often the best medicine when the day is gloomy and heavy.
Coffee isn’t too bad out the nostrils, but I can vouch that pepperoni pizza is the worst. I’ve learned not to read anything on HAMB while eating. I don’t remember the thread or story I was reading one day while eating pizza. Long story short I got to laughing so hard some pieces of pepperoni went out my nose the remaining pizza went down my throat between choking, the pain I my nose and my laughter I had tears in my eyes. My wife comes in the living room where I was seated eating my pizza sees the mess, me laughing/crying, my iPhone on the floor. She says “you ok?” I said “yep I’m fine” she just looks at me shaking her head waiting for me to compose myself and tell my story.
    Dan
PS I don’t think she understood any of my episode.

  12. Marcus,

The rod was long enough to check that as well. I did that yesterday along with answering th question posed by @snoc653 about the angle of entry. As you can all see in the picture my trusty dusty angle finder says....Almost dead nuts straight!

As far as the inside travel, it is a very sharp angle towards the side wall & I found (pictured) this mark that lines up exactly with the rod. By th etime it got there it did not have much steam left.

The Problem with finding the slug is that the hood was covered in plastic, so I had NO idea when it happened! When I am working with the bay door open I get a lot of leaves that blow in. I sweep the room frequently & was not looking for it. I have not moved the open trailer or the 55 Nash in at least 6 months, so it is possible it could be under one of them. Put the pieces back on the Nash yesterday & have the battery charger on it right now. If it starts, I will move it & check for the slug. It will be a while yet before I move the trailer though.

By the way Dan @Sharpone ...Carbonate Pop is much worse! LOL Since I use a laptop, not a phone I have a bigger area to clean should I "Spout":p

    God Bless

Not sure if any of you guys are night owls/insomniacs like I am and watch late night TV, but "Forensic Files" is a show I have fallen asleep to more times than I care to admit. I remember watching this episode years ago (it was the second episode of the first season) about a boy who was killed at a pistol and gun club. The episode was fascinating, but the way the bullet was able to travel through various different materials while still maintaining lethal velocity, but also ricocheting off of other, always stuck with me. It's something I don't think many people appreciate when they're using firearms, just how far and how fast that bullet it traveling.

I remember that episode. The kid was just sitting there in a chair. That was a magic bullet if ever there was one.

That is the problems with bullets, they are all magical. Some have good magic and some have dark magic. I've seen some very strange results from bullets hitting things and taking strange bounces. I used to shoot 2000 meters and have heard the round come back by going the other direction. When I moved to Iowa, I left that rifle with a friend in Texas to sell for me. There isn't a safe place in Iowa that I know of to target shoot that rifle without the risk of a magic bullet bouncing and possibly hitting something or someone. I can probably still hit what I'm aiming at, back then it was 10" steal disks at 2000 meters, now there aren't many ranges over 500yards around here. If that is a 2 degree down angle, I'd say they were either shooting a varmint and missed/shot through it or shot at a close range target and shot through it. The scratch from hitting the inside wall could just be a deflection. The round probably still had plenty of kinetic force but the angle and deflection of the wall probably just redirected the round. If Bill continues the downward angle and looks up to 45 degrees away from the side wall he may find the final impact point. Just be glad nothing else and nobody else was hit.

    Hey, Bill;
Thanks for the extra pics. Surprised that it merely scraped the wall, & deflected off of the rib. Will be real interesting if you ever find the bullet. Both for condition & caliber. Will make a nice convo-piece, framed/lighted/hung-displayed on the wall like a trophy. Hopefully, you will find it, if for no other reason than to know. From the holes in the sheetmetal, I'd guess a fairly high-powered rifle(?), not a shotgun-slug. I think someone already speculated on it. Also surprised at the small amount of damage - no offense to you. Glad nothing worse &/or else was done.

I don't shoot much anymore around here, maybe a .22 rimfire at various small varmints that need dying, but am aware they can travel too, so even then, the shots are very limited. & most damn varmints get away w/o the needed dietary supplement. Oh, well. I also don't like putting holes in my cars n crap.
    Marcus...

  21. Hi Bill,
Living in the country means hearing gunfire, not stopping rounds.
One day I had a round whizz close to my shop as I was standing outside when the round hit.
The shot came from below me, down on the lower road.
Flew down there to find a stranger showing his son how to pick high growing mistletoe with a deer rifle!
Said he was shooting in my direction since there was a house on the other side of the road. Dumb ass!
He got one warning and decided it was prudent to leave the area.

Or Maybe it was this guy. The poster boy for ricocheting rounds.

All kidding aside, HAPPY NEW YEAR and a safe 2025!

    Bill P.

Man, I feel your pain. I've had a rough stretch over the past 10 or so days.

    1. Stepped on a large'ish stingray while surf fishing near Corpus Christi on December 29th. Barb went completely through my foot. Pretty much the worst pain I have ever experienced, and it lasted for several hours. This is more operator error than luck, of course; I was not shuffling my feet like you should when walking in the surf.

    2. Found out on January 1st that my college and law school roommate's son was killed in the New Orleans attack early that morning. Not bad luck for me, but horrible luck for Tiger Bech and his family.

    3. Shot at an 8 point deer on January 3d at about 7:30 am. 100 yard shot with a scoped bolt action shotgun with a rifled barrel. It was really foggy and I rushed the shot. I'm a damn good marksman, but pretty sure I didn't do my job on this one. We blood trailed him for at least 500 yards over 4 hours, but eventually lost the trail. Anyway, either the scope got knocked off zero or I made a bad shot. I'm leaning towards the latter, but need to confirm zero before I take another shot with it.

    4. Trying to remove a garden hose from a hose bib on the back of the house and it wouldn't budge. Ended up breaking a fitting inside the wall. $850 to get it repaired on Sunday. Again, this is more operator error than bad luck; I put too much damn pressure on it.

Hope that's all sh*tty occurrences scheduled for my immediate future!!!

@bulletpruf Reading about your woes reminds me of the Rodney Dangerfield joke about door knob and briefcase handle. Maybe sit out the next couple days!

  25. WOW @bulletpruf ....Definitely a tough stretch!

My condolences on the lost of your friends Son. Our thoughts & prayers are with his family & the families of all the others that were injured/killed in that terrorist attack.

Other than the "hood ventilation" & the fact that I broke Stubby on my last blast of the year, I have not talked too much about the other & much worse things that happened in '24, because frankly most are just too personal & don't really belong on a car forum. One other would probably end up on a Mickey Mouse little website leased by someone who is insanely jealous of my business & rapport with my customers (he has done it before in an attempt to make me look bad).

2025 is going to be a GREAT year for the vast majority of us, I truly believe that!

    God Bless

Hopefully the new year is off to a good start for you. It saddens me when I hear about companies that try to build their business by bad mouthing others in the same business. I will not use a company that does that. I had an owner call to follow up on an estimate his salesman gave me. I told him I wouldn’t be using them and why. He said but it’s all true. I told him everyone makes mistakes. It’s how you deal with them that makes you a professional. Telling me why I shouldn’t use someone else doesn’t tell me why I should use you, so I won’t be and using that sales tactic is a mistake. One of the companies they bad mouthed wound up doing the job. It was done very well. Things will always go wrong. It is how you deal with them that matters and defines you. And by all accounts, you sir are a good man. Stay on the high road and enjoy the view. Hopefully you’ll be on the road as much as you want this year.
