I don't have the money to buy it but I'd like just to know where it is and what happened to it. I have the vin # off of grandpa's 40 deluxe coupe he had in the 70's-80's. Is there something on the internet that you can type a vin into and get some info? It wasn't a hot rod jut a nice original/restored 40 coupe. The ***** he sold it to came back a few months later and had flames and salt discs on it. Nothing wrong with flames and discs but NOT on a tan car with a stock stance.....goofy looking......restored/hot rod/street rod iden***y crisis! mainly just curious...
Try this. (from the state links below, choose your state) http://www.vehicleidentificationnumber.com/department_of_motor_vehicles.html
****, i thought you had something there....it came back an error and then said must be 81 and newer......dang! that would be cool!
i have often wondered if this is possible also. although, i would be looking for previous owners. i've seen the ***le checks online, but i figured it would be a dead end after i paid.
not sure if Carfax.com could help, cause if it's not a modern # they get a lot of errors. You can punch in the number and if the information looks correct you can purchase the report that shows how many owners and what state they've been in, mileage, etc. But it won't give specific info
I ran into the same roadblock tracking down an old truck. Records in most states just don't go back very far. Here in IL they have a form at the DMV that allows you to do VIN checks for a fee. I was going to use it to try to track down an old A roadster that my dad built in the early 60's but haven't done it yet. So possibly check with your DMV. I tracked down and bought back my dad's old 32 coupe recently but I was fortunate enough to have the buyer's last name and he still owned it... after 41 years! Flathead...just clicked on this old link and saw you already found it! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=84921
i think it was car fax that had the 1980 and newer error....... yep, same here.....since i don't want to buy it, i hate to pay for it.....like you said, probably not sufficent info anyway... yes, i saw your thread........very cool and glad to hear you got it!!!
any other ideas......anyone have an aunt's, brother's, uncle's, cousin's, former roommate that works for the DMV?
I was able to find my old truck. It was still registered in my same state. A friend that is a trooper ran the number for me.
The DMV could only help if it's currently registered or has been recently. I had a car I lost the reg to and they'd dumped it out of the system after 5 years, here in New York. They gave me some kind of paper certificate, but it's just as easy now to get a new registration without an old one. Even then I'd think it varies from state to state and even office to office wether or not you could get any help. They might not be able to give you the information, but they might be able to address a letter for you if you left it with them to send to the current owner - if it comes up. If it was stolen later on, then it's on file in the state it was reported in - probably eventually those serials will go into some kind of searchable database, too. I'd like to know whatever became of my dad's '70 Gran Prix, too, but it's too old to look up on most of those systems.
there's an officer that works our proms, ball games, etc......she said she'd be glad to look it up for me.... keep ya posted!
