I made this bench from an old, solid door and 2x4's back in the 70's. It's been with me ever since. I prefer to call this section of the garage my "man cave". Heat, frig, computer w/server access, stereo, U-verse tv - every thing but a bed and a potty (and that's just inside the back door in the other part of the garage.

Been there many a time. 2 x 4's over rubbermaid cans work wonders. Plus it helps keep the mess down too

    Alot of great benches!

    Thanks,

  6. That's cool. But I gotta ask, why do all you southern boys call grandpa, pawpaw? Just curious.

Dave, no he was from Chicago Hts. at the time, he got it from another Uncle of mine who was a contractor and lived in Beecher, IL, just up the road from Momence....it kicked around in his various moves until I got it from him probably 20 years back, then I stuck it in storage until I was able to build my shop in 2006.....

Probably not the one you hauled, but very well could have come from the same Bowling alley......freaky... :)

Yeah, hanging up I have my best friends (who passed away last year) work shirt from our old shop that we closed, and my grand fathers car club jacket, and my mentor and teacher of the trade's shop coat. Most of my tools were my great grand father's so its like he is there with me.

Here is my brand new workbench. I laminated 32 2X6s together, set on edge, and used 5 allthread bars to hold it together. I used an old metal stand from my 75 gallon fish tank for support. The thing weighs a ton. I made a replaceable top from Masonite. I'm a Ford guy, so I only need one tool on the pegboard. ImageUploadedByTJJ1326248178.970425.jpg

Here's mine. I got tired of having all of my stuff visable. Probably a little over the top but I figured that I would have it for the rest of my life, why not have it be nice? It weighs about 4 tons. I tried to make it look like it was old. the back is rusted metal and I wired it with two power boxes and lights. the best part is, it unplugs from the wall if I want to move it or if i move houses. I made a matching cabinet to go over the tool box that unscrews from the wall as well. I'll try a before and after here....

It's somewhere back there in the corner of the garage buried in stuff with a yellow bucket sitting on it.

Ive seen your bench in the "homemade tools" thread. I want to copy it. I love the heim joints idea. I want to build the copy of your bench on the backside of my bench, since its a mobile bench. I will take pictures this weekend so it will make more sense.

    Thanks,

Should mention, I live in an old, old house that I've redone.

Wanted the heim joints for looks, but more importantly no legs to the floor and that wall's not plumb.

Thought it was easier to build some adjustment into it than to fixture the whole bench when welding it together so that the top was perfectly level when installed.

It's tied into the framework of the house. Have sat two people on it at once. It doesn't even wiggle.

It doesnt wiggle.. Dont they have a pill for that? Lol couldnt resist. I have my work bench in my parents back yard as I just moved into a new house. I have my tool box's set up and welding cart set up but will be bringing my actual work bench to the new house this coming week (had to do some cleaning and rearranging of all of the boxes we have yet to go through.

    Thanks,
