Wow!!! If you ever need a small pc. of metal again for a hot rod project let me know. I will send it to you. $0.00 you pay shipping. I have a metal shop and I save all the drops ( left over pcs. from a cut) I give them away when possible. It has to be a hot rod project not a bird house. I am south of Boston. Web site www.wickedhotrod.com
I give away all kinds of metal to the local HAMB guys and for coffeee and donuts I can put a couple of bends in it. I love any hot rod project. If I can kick in a little something to get you rolling I will.

I'm pretty sure anyone showing up at a recycle yard with road signs is going to meet, before he leaves, a representative from the local law enforcement. Old road signs aren't give away, they're recycled or found on the side of the road, which is steeling. Plus, what a stupid idea for a heat shield, sorry but, you're either a thief or a friend of one.[/QUOTE]

i am no thief and i dont hang with thieves but i do have a lot of signs.
i used to run a crew that did a lot of sidewalk work and city beautification projects.
ask the right people and the signs are yours when they get replaced.
at laest thats been my experience.
and is it stealing if yoiu buy a car from an old junkyard and find signs used for floorboards.
    ive had that happen too.
those things can become yours in various ways without you being a thief.

I'm in the machine shop business so I have around whatever I need, or can have it in a day. I never throw anything out unless it's too bent to use.

Some places like ACE Hardware of Lowes have aluminum sheet as well. No certs or pedigree with it, but often the price is right and the stuff is clean. Just fine for non-structural applications.

That is just me farting..... I was at the movie theater yesterday, sorry. :)

For a short time, i hauled stuff away for a small village. i got quite a few signs and the yard never complained but the prices were cheaper back then. Then they replaced me with a regular recycling co. that paid them good money for the s****. I wish i could find another gig like that.

Anybody have any info on how to weld these old road signs? Thanks to this post, I know how to clean them up. Now if I only knew how to weld them.

When I was 17 I got arrested for having street signs in my garage - turns out it's a Felony in California, possession of stolen government property. Fortunately they couldn't prove they were stolen and we sued the city to get it removed from my record, but the point is you might want to be careful with having them. Especially if they have a city seal on them (which is how I got off, mine didn't have a seal)

On a different note - I can't believe no one has commented on the guy who makes carb heat shields out of WOOD! A burnable material

Yea on the wood idea. I kinda went HM too. Might just soak up a bit after a while.
I tend to like the gas goin in the various pre-appointed holes. Friend of mine had his living room in his house done in old street signs. Then he found Miss Right, and became a citizen.

The local metal recyclers had hundreds of old signs in about any size you wanted. All you had to do is pay the per pound price. A friend picked me up a stop light for under $3. They converted to LED here a couple years back. Now that the metal prices are up, nothing around to scavenge any more.

I am in civil engineering, and many public and private projects have items of work to "remove signs"- sometimes the project Specifications say something like "salvage" or "deliver to **** Corporation Yard" or they are to be re-installed during improvements- but if they aren't in good enough shape to be re-used, don't fit in the new project, are outdated/superceded, or they just don't want them, "remove" means you have to dispose of them. Most any general engineering contractor has a collection of old signs, many of which can be used as temps on projects, but many are just s****- NOT "stolen". They also make good raw materials for the company shop. Many signs get removed/ replaced simply because of new specs like their reflective quality or content- notice how some newer signs reflect brighter when your headlights hit them? Even the temporary construction signs we put up for projects (either owned by the company or rented) are specified by reflective ability, and if old ones can't be used any more, see ya, they're s****. But having a fairly new street or town name sign with "Property Of ****" that's hanging in your garage, and they have some missing, might get you in a bit of trouble

Phenolic resin is a common spacer/insulator material. That stuff burns pretty good too.

A little O/T but a good, cheap alternative for sheetmetal are old washing machines and dryers. They're very plentiful in the 'free' section of the local craigslist and there aren't any legal consequences involved. Great for patch panels!

I take street signs i dont agree with myself, like 20mph signs, wear your seatbelt, no parking or welcome to ****ville ect

  20. Been around a long time.

  21. Thanks, here in south coastal Florida the signs take a beating from both the blazing sun to the humidity, to the salty air. You can hardly make out what the sign read that I used and received LEGALY from the town. They are replaced regularly as well as reflectors, and delineators. The same stupid people with the ignorant " stealing " comments are the first to call thier lawyer, take pictures of the worn out signs and sue someone else for thier poor driving skills, ignorance, and hardship.
