Yesterday I slid on my 48 drums onto my 40 rear axles without the keys in. I could slide the drum all the way back till the lip hits the backing plate. I know that the taper is what holds the hub on for the most part, so does this mean I need to shim my axle? How many of you other fellas use axle shims or are running tapered rear axles? I know alot of my Model A buddys use the shims but it has always seemed a little sketchy to me.
Can you chuck the drums in the turning machine and take a "skoosh" off the back edge? Or is the lip of the backing plate hitting down in the groove of the drum? I'd try t******* the drum or plate before using shims, if possible.
Both drums? Both axles? Is the axle ***embly known to be from same source, or could it be ***embled from bits? Can you borrow an axle shaft or hub from someone and compare how far hubs slide onto axles? This seems odd and disturbing, and does not seem like normal except for Model A fit up. Maybe axles and housings are different years?? Shims are very dodgy things...these parts depend on really tight fit.
My buddy was putting a quick change together for a guy and ran into a simular deal. Turned out the guy had 35-41 lenght housings and had provieded 33-34 axles which are about 3/8 of a inch shorter than the 35-41 stuff.
