putting together a 37 ford p/u street rod with a very large 383 stroker in it. it will run through a super T10 GM trans. would like something strong enough to handle the torque, etc (close to 500 ft lbs from the engine) and posi (or similar) thinking ford 9", but having a problem figuring the proper axle housing (length flange to flange), would really like to use a 12 bolt GM rear with posi, but i can't figure out what will work without having the axle cut and welded to size. would prefer something that is sized properly without having too have one "made" to fit so to speak. what have you all been using in similar applications that have held up well?? what size (length) works properly?? open to any and all suggestions and opinions for the help. many thanks
i would go with a 9 inch ford and be done with it. shortening isnt that big of a deal anyway. sometimes you can the axles re splined also. i would get a measurement from outside fender to outside fender. then set the tires and wheels im going to use on the ground at the max width i want them.then measure from inside wheel to inside wheel and youll have you rear width. i think it would be alot harder if you dont have the wheels though. too many variables for me.i wouldnt want to shorten a rear and worry about finding the wheels later. just my opinion.
Like he just said!-----The '57 Ford 9" rear end is readily available & very strong axles. Back spacing on your wheels can be done with no problem when setting the tire widths.
Sounds like if its as dreaded as you say witch ever rear end you use you will want after market axles anyway and if a 12 bolt you will need C clip eliminators.
Don't overlook the Ford 8.8 rears. They come in everything from f 150 pickups down to Explorers, Rangers, and Mustangs. Some of them, The Explorer and Ranger versions, have an offset differential, so it's easy to shorten the long side down to the short side length and use short side axles on both sides. Lots of them have good ratio's, and some come with a Trac loc posi. You would probably want to add a set of the C clip eliminators if you plan on a lot of drag strip style starts. They have both drum and disc brake versions, too. Also lots easier to find in the yards than 9"s anymore.....
