H All, I'm building a speedster with a 51 Ford Flathead 6 joined to a left-hand side shift V8 trans on a Model A frame. Here's some pics... https://www.facebook.com/messedupmo...kkH1nNn5EweTt7cox715RHysVDxnRApyGwYDc3y2a2cel I plan to shift outside the car on the left with pushrods from the shifter, but would loke to see some photos of side shift shifters, any thoughts if if one can be bought, or any general advice on how LH shifters shift (linkage-wise), but photos definitely help. Thanks guys! Julian from New Zealand!
Why not just get a floor shift conversion and make a new shift handle bent to where you want it to be?
How about something as simple as laying a 3-speed column shifter on its side 90 degrees to the left side of the tranny? Looks like it could go above and forward of the tranny. Line the column shift levers up with the tranny levers. Doesn't look that difficult to me.
I have one but it’s a fair bend to the left, under the knees and outside. I converted the box to side shift so I could keep the inside cleaner. I do have a RH top load shifter (for side shift) I may try to flip to the left, and use pushrods. See the shifter in the pics
Flip the floor shifter upside down, then run the handle that you make under the floor. May have to flip the shift arms on the tranny also.
He's in NZ where we all shift with the Left hand [RHD] so that battle is already won. Just mount a 3 speed shifter on the L/H rail. Get the shift arms phased the correct way and either use shift cables or shifter rods with heim joints [for the rod angle] If it is too difficult to modify the shift levers to phase them [as in flip them upside down] Use shift cables in a "U" shape to the shifter.[either front or rear] Japanese Trucks like Toyota Dyna's have pretty staunch shift cables [so do most Vans] I looked at doing something very similar 20 years ago to a Muncie [converting an old sprint car to a "Hill Climb special"]
Sorry, I didn't even think about the shift levers being on the RH side. You need to call Rube Goldberg.
I think I would find a 46-48 open drive pickup top shift trans and straddle it, I'm wondering about the placement of the clutch, brake and throttle pedals.
I think this is the right idea. Comes with everything needed. I would mount it horizontally behind the trans next to or forward of the seat, 90* to the frame. Shorten the assembly, freeze plugs to cap the shift tube, a cover on the shift collar, mounting brackets and shift rods and you're done. Easy to type. (LOL) If the shift pattern isn't right, (But , I think it will be.) that can be fixed by either flipping the trans shift levers up or changing the orientation of the levers on the shift tube when shortening it.
How about extention shafts out the left side of the gearbox? Bits of steering column complete with U-joints suggest themselves. Then transpose the entire shifter mechanism including the arms on the 'box outside the frame rail?
