Looks like a sedan that had the roof cut off to me. Quite the Kustom.

How about custom p.o.s.? Not what I care for, but it could be a fun car for not a lot of $$$'s

There is more to that than meets the eye. At first glance, I thought it is/was a '49 because of the tail lights. At second glance, I noticed it has '50 or later body panels everywhere except for the tail lights.

Whatever it began as. it is highly modified. Not to my taste, but a Custom for sure and, maybe,a POS. The latter depends on workmanship details that can't be easily seen in the photo

  10. It's a custom and I like the idea.
But the details aren't thought all the way thru and its unfinished. Perhaps unfinishable without m***ive amounts of rework.

Such as zip ties holding in the windshield, no rear 1/4 Windows, and the windshield header won't hold up to convertible standards and latches.

That kind of stuff moves rapidly towards POS

    Custom.

I'm glad it isn't located in the Chicago area otherwise I would be very tempted to go look at it in person

Appears to have been a '50 Buick, fastback maybe? It has the upper rear quarters of a '49 grafted on and I guess that most of the "trunk" area is fabricated.
I would think that the front doors just haven't been capped off yet since the rear quarter windows are.

I think it has potential. The things I don't like are the top and the "lip" around the rear of the interior at the tulip panel.

You're glad that it's not in the Chicago area because then you could/would be disappointed.

$8000? Overpriced POS. I've never liked to look of hardtops with the roofs cut off (especially 49-51 Merc 4 doors) because it almost never seems to work. As Vicky and others mentioned: windshield header, capped off doors and side windows, awkward tulip panel transitions. Would have been better off leaving the roof on.

Call it what you like, but I surely wouldn't go all the way from Louisville KY, to central California to buy something like that!!!

Whenever I see a car with the roof cut off, the first thing that enters my mind -
"Oh, look ! Somebody cut the roof off another old car ! "

  20. The gaps around the doors look a bit sketchy, especially around the hood/fender/door junctions.
It's a good possibility the ch***is is not reinforced to go *******. I strongly suggest a pro inspection so you know what you're getting before any money changes hands. You could be buying Bondo by the pound.
It's not totally ugly and might be a fun weekend driver for a while until it gets parked out behind the barn next to the treeline.

Neither would I. I have zero interest in buying it. I just wanted to get some opinions on what you guys thought of it.

Here's another one with the top cut off which is a lot closer to me (Cincinnati). It's a '49 Chevy that the owner made a few upgrades to including reinforcing the frame (under the back seat), adding front disc brakes, 6 volt to 12 volt, changing the 3 on the tree to a 5 on the floor, etc. With a decent paint job it wouldn't be a bad car in my opinion....

If you are gonna cut the roof off a car. Start with a 2-door hardtop. For the most part, the body is that of a convertible. Same as with the doors. A**** other things. Is a POS or is it a custom. I could post 1000`s of so called rot rods that think they are street rods that are POS. You build something to the best of your ability and with the funds you have. Call it a POS, but it is only $8000. Not $15000.

The roof supplies a lot of strength to the car , convertibles are built with much stronger floor/inner rockers and are much heavier cars than coupes or sedans for that reason

  30. Now '******, don't get all political and get the thread closed (5...4...3...2...1...:D...)

Different skirts would help a ton, but it does have that look like it was an extra on Leviathan or The Thing...
