Anyone can fix a car but it takes a real man to cut one up..... CHOP IT!

  2. Theres plenty of "Real men" out there who ****ed them up some.
Its a top car right now ,go buy yourself another body chop it and transfer - you will apreciate a standard roofline once youve had the chopped version.

If you can make it look as good as chevy54's car go for it. That car is wicked.

  4. sorry im in the same spot as you trying to decide the same thing. yours is way nicer than mine though so take that into consideration.

Unless you can find a local guy experienced with the gl*** work on a chopped 54 I would leave it alone. Theres a couple of chevys running around dayton with plexigl*** windshields and screws and sealer holding it in

  6. Yes on the chop top, but you had better have deep pockets full of cash or lots and lots of body work skills to do it right! Hey...Are those Port-A-Walls on the front? I would love to chop my '51 but have NO body work skills or equipment and I have asked experienced body men about doing it and it would cost $3,000.00 + then another paint job :eek: I think I can live with out the chop, besides I need to do a hundred other things to it first.
A bunch more teeth in the grille would be a cheap custom grille fix that I think looks good. Your car looks good right now though, and lower is a definite do!
    My 2 cents :D

  7. Now this is KOOL !!!!!!! That should help you decide for sure !!!!!

Personally I wouldn't chop it, some look good but you have to be careful and not go too far, I also like the earlier rear window on a chopped 53-54 but it is all about what you want. Do what tripps your trigger not what someone else says.

Why not do something in between your current two choices of chop or no chop? Be unique (or semi-unique, at least) and section the roof. Subtle modifications like dropping the lid by sectioning it will improve the look without looking like every other one out there. Be creative...:)

Normally I would say chop the top till it is as low as you can go. But in this case I say a mild chop would make the car more attractive. Do what you want, not what others say.

    Carson top.

  22. Or more of the shame.

I probably would be more concerned about tire at this point than a chop. From the pics at least one of those tires has been into a curb at least one time too many.

Gentleman's chop good idea, you may also consider sectioning it. That would be a very traditional thing to do if you want a body mod and it will keep you from parking next to yourself on many occasions.

But you asked about chop didn't you. No I probably would not. At the very least I would not give it a gonzo chop and if you are not going to lower the lid much it is a lot of work for very little change.

Now if it were still rough then the gentlemans chop would be where I was headed with it for sure.

Nope...I'd leave the top as-is and dump the hokey spotlights, buy a nice chrome upper grill bar set, sell the skirts and use the money to buy a pair of dropped spindles. Some black tires and chrome reverse wheels would help too.

Then by our established definition, they're not "real men" then, am I right? Any fool can cut, but it takes an artist to make it look right :) I never said I was cuttin it with a hacksaw and just tacking it back together, guys! Yes, I hit curb or two but: A. They're cheapo tires, B. It's my personal car and I drive how I drive. I can't change how I drive because you feel sorry for my tire. My daily car's plastic hubcaps are worn almost offend I've blown tires on curbs. It's how I drive. I can't change. C. This thing's been in a garage since the pic was taken and the tire's gone flat. I'll probably get a new set soon. Plus, these are portawalls that just rip off at highway speeds, not just curb rubbing.

Chevy54, how much did you chop yours? Yours is pretty much what I'd like to do!

How odd I get ripped for a bad tire. If the body was in total disrepair, everyone here would say chop it, what's the worst that could happen. As if it got into "nice" condition by accident. Not trying to be rude, I just think it's funny that a lot of the comments sound like they think I found a stock car and want to mess it up.

She doesn't sit stock, I already can't get a floor jack under the bumper and I don't plan on lowering it more. When I got it it was primered, the trim was loose and held on with duct tape, 3 or 4 paint jobs showed in spots and it had tore red bucket seats bolted to wood blocks on foot long threaded rods that were WELDED to the floor. I'd say I've cleaned her up nice if I do say so myself! :D

So sorry for the rant! I appreciate everyone's thoughts, just some seem more critical than necessary!

It could use to be dropped a bit if your going to take 3+ inches out of the top in my opinion. If your going to leave it up a bit then a very mild chop might be a bit more called for, or leave it uncut. But thats just my 2 cents.

To answer your question mine is cut 4 inches at all 4 corners and brought straight down...nothing leaned or pulled. It took quartering and stretching the roof to accomplish that tho. Heres a couple pics to give you a better idea on how it was done.
