Customs Would you pay this??????????

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 4ever17, Oct 20, 2008.

  1. I have a friend that lives down the street about a mile or so. He has this sad little 49 shoebox sitting in the driveway. It has been in the same spot for going on 15 years. The car is obviously in need of a lot of work. I have been after him to sell me the car for a year now. He has finally decided that he will, BUT, he wants the $4500 he has invested in it back!!!

It may have been worth that back when it ran and was in good shape, but I don't think it is worth half that now. This is a car that needs almost every patch panel made for it. The motor is a 351 that ran years ago, and even that is not installed correctly.

    Any thoughts?

  3. I don't think I'd give that for it. I'm not even sure I'd give half that for it but I'm not real fond of those short tops any way ..

El Paso on the Fordo! You can find a better one for that money.
Always buy the car with the best body possible for the money you have. Ch***is/engine work is cheap compared to good correct body work and the paint it takes to preserve it.

  6. you got great friends , does the engine turn over or possibly start? will it roll with a set of inflated tires? $1800 maybe ..

P***...make him a standing offer of what you would be willing to pay and let him post it for sale on craigslist...he'll get some lowballers and maybe realize it isn't worth what he thinks.

He has too much money in it, but that doesn't mean you should pay him for his mistakes. Way too much money at $4,500. I'm with chaddilac at $1,500.

Concur with many of the others - too much $ for the car. Kinda makes me wonder why it sat for all those years? Looks like a $4500 mistake that was outta control 15 years ago and only got worse with age. $1K-$2K tops. If he's a real friend he'll take your lowball offer and thank you for making it.

  19. If you want to stay friends, stay far away from the deal.

    It's either A or B.

A- he really believes it is worth that amount.
Or B- he is trying to take advantage of a friend.

If A, and he really does believe it, then it is either "a" - you pay the crazy amount and it bothers you for a long long time that he took advantage of you,
or "b" - you pay the lower amount, you put lots of work and money in it, he sees the nice finished car, and he resents you for "taking advantage" of him.

I see that happen to people all the time.

No matter how good a diplomat you think you are, this one sounds like a touchy situation.

I've done several shoebox's and the main thing I find hard is finding good trim. If he had all the trim, and it didn't need ANY work at all, I would go at the most $2500. If it didn't, $1500-1800. If he balked at that offer, just walk away.

I definitely wouldn't pay that much for it.

  24. Keep your money. Take that money and buy a nice, already fixed up shoebox. Then when you drive over to your friends place with your shoe box, you and your friend will have something in common to continue to grow your friendship with. Both of you will own Ford shoeboxes, only thing being is that yours runs and drives! By doing this you won't be ticked off at your friend for selling you a car that seems to be a piece of junk the more and more you work on it.

  27. And people think my friend wants too much money for some of his stuff? Holy ****. He has one of those, all original, for some reason the rearend is out of it but it comes with another one, that 1/5th of what your buddy wants would probably take.

it does seem kinda high in todays econmic climate, but it looks like a pretty cool project. The body looks straight and headlights are frenched and caddy hubcaps. could make a pretty cool little ride.

  30. I was hoping(planning) on paying a max of 2k for the car. I know that may seem like alot, but the way I figured it the car is the type of project I am looking for. It is close by, and the car is still registered in Ct. That means get an insurance card and go to DMV for your new plates. Even in it's condition I could have it insured and registered without any issues as it is already registered in this state. makes life easy.

My wife asked me Sunday what top dollar was on this car, and 2k was it. As soon as he started with the $4500 I new it was all over. I guess he wants it to rust into the ground right where it sits.

    Oh well....... I'll keep looking.
