    Build the Buick.
Its equally sentimental and will be more so because it will probably outlast him. Also its really cool.

Forget the truck they get beat on by idiot owners and you dont realize it untill much later. Dont ask how i know.

Keep the shoebox, and I'll make a deal with you on a flattie I have in the garage. Sentimental value is worth so much more when its gone. I say keep it.

I wouldnt even think about it till I went over that truck with a fine tooth comb, check all the rot spots and look for cracks everywhere....seems that those guys used their trucks back in the day and they get beat up right good....

doglegs, bed mounts, rockers, sill plates and floor recesses for the doors are all popular spots to fail on those trucks....

Make sure if your gona loose sentiment that you get something good outta the deal and not a bondo'ed wonder....

  4. It's a no brainer. Get the truck.

^^^^X2, but tell the shoebox's new owner you want first dibs if he ever decides to sell.

  6. It depends some on what motor is in the truck, but value wise you're looking at a fairly even swap from what I can see. Neither one is going to bring big money at Barrett-Jackson, although they will vary some from market to market. So what it boils down to is how much you want to be able to jump in and drive, and drive a pickup, versus how much sentimental value you have in that car and how much you'd prefer to put it back together and drive. That's a personal decision, I would think.

And the shoebox would be pretty easy to stick like a small block Chevy of some sort in just to get you on the road again until you can come up with a flatty for it. Maybe like a 305 or even a 4.3 V6 so you're not pushing the limits on the trans and rear.

No motor- meaning it doesnt drive- versus something you can cruise around in? I got my toy on jack stands right now and it is killing me. I vote yes if you want to cruise.

If you have THAT MUCH sentimental value, then I think the decision is already made. You will kick yourself if it means something to you.

Keep the shoebox, I can get you a flattie for $200-$300.

  9. I wouldn't. . . but it's up to you. If you decide to trade, and then get a deal on a flattie later you can always replace that SBC in the pickum-up with it :) and sell the Chevy engine to somebody with a Ford  :p

If you'd let the shoebox go for immediate gratification then you're not really that into it. Let it go

PS- If you want a beater, that's more a state of mind than a state of vehicle. Changing the vehicle ain't gonna change you.

not ever, don't even think about it. the truck is probably worth a grand at most and the shoebox even w/o motor is worth much more than that. you would be trading a classic for an ordinary, noisy, weak, poorly designed, must I go on?

From 4 doors to 2 doors? No brainer.

If you had a 2 door shoebox, then I'd have said no.

except for the sentimental value, I would dump that 4 door, not-running shoebox in a heartbeat for the pick-up

There's a lot of value in being able "drive" a vehicle. But look the truck over very carefully because a lot of rust can make up for a lot of "drive", IMHO...

When i first read the options i didn't even see the car was a 4 door. NOT that it makes a world of difference especially if it has sentimental value to it..
But if you were to remove that aspect of it, i'd trade.
It's that sentimental thing that throws a wrench in it for me....

the sentimental value of your shoebox would sway it for me. I say no.

  29. Sounds like the Ford might find it's way back to you anyway. Here's the deal in my opinion, many cars we have had hold a sentimental value of some sort but like Thomas Wolfe once said, "You can't go home again".
If you don't have the money to finish the Fordor you won't have the money to finish the Buick either. Sounds like it can sit if you and grampa don't need the money out of it, finish it when you do have some money, and you won't have stuck that dough in the shoe box instead. Get the truck and drive it, if it really is a driver, and for god's sake don't paint it flat black with red wheels like every other one being done these days.
