I know that black or red wheels are all the rage, supposedly they are racy and tough. But who out there is sporting white wheels. I seem to remember that a lot of the famous drag and circle track cars of the late 50's and early 60's were running white steelies.

I just repainted my wheels back to white while I was waiting for my gas tank sealer to cure. I think they look stellar!

So let's see some white wheels out there. I know there are more than a few of you that have some, show 'em proud.

In the '60s, we had a sort of loose 'racing team' (mostly Fremont drags, but were no strangers to Montague Expressway, Trimble Rd., or 10th St. in San Jose...)
We hung out at the R-J drive in, on El Camino in Santa Clara. Our big rivals were the A&W drive-in guys from Sunnyvale, 4 miles up El Camino.

Most everybody with fast cars at R-J had black wheels/black tires, but our little circle switched to white wheel black tires, we were 'exclusive'.
One night, after some hot runoffs at the lights on Trimble Rd., we were all parked for car service in R-J's, and in come the badge bandits.
They ticketed everybody there, for 'unlawful assembly', and a stiff warning: "You white-rim guys are in our sights now. We'll get you, count on it."
Only a couple of us kept our white wheels, everybody else went back to black!

1965 or 64, white wheels were on a few local cars. No caps, no whitewalls, no trim rings. The neighbor had a slick 57 Bel Air 2dr htp, coppertone with ivory top with cheater slicks and white wheels. Sticks in my mind after all these years.

I have white wheels. I would love to show you, but uploading a photo from photobucket is more frustrating than working on my 6 volt electrical system. I'll keep trying.

I got my old '46 in the summer of '66. Still had the original stock "Moonstone" gray paint and wheels with the tristripe. I only had enough money for the cheapest of modifications so 3 rattlecans of white & some masking tape from Kmart, and some tireblack (remember that nasty stuff?) and presto= the boy racer look. Paint and a second hand set of chrome reverse Chrysler 15" w/some baby moon caps that had some cool embossed lines around the outside edge, by the next summer. I don't think anybody repops those caps and I couldn't find a replacement when somebody clipped my LR fender.

Isn't everyone forgetting the 1/2 white 1/2 black from the 60's drag racing days. Lets give equal time for the guys that go both ways.:rolleyes::D:D:D

That's the look I recall... One step up was to use the station wagon deep dish wheels on the back...I think they are now called "409 wheels" ?

The hot dogs around here either ran black wheels with a white triangle or white wheels with a black triangle so their pit crew could tell how much wheel spin they had to deal with. At least that was the theory at the time. The white wheels with black tires give a nice clean look though.

The last days of Fremont drag strip ("Baylands") were host to the 'old time drags'.
Art Chrisman, the Bean Bandits, Pete & Jake, and lots of their customers made the pilgramage from Southern Calif.
Pete Eastwood was there with a nice '34 Five window, (SBC) slightly oxydized red, with these off-white wheels & black Racemaster slicks, with Firestone ribbed fronts.
That car stood out like a 1955 cover of Hot Rod mag!
High 12s, as I recall, no slouch. But the wheels were outstanding.

Just mounted a pair of vintage Stahl tires on white steelies. Have them on the front of my 69 Fairlane Junior Stocker... have chrome reverse on the rear.

I also have a pair of J.C. Penney cheater slicks displayed on whites too.:)

Decided to go with white wheels on my F100 when it got put back together this spring. Glad I made that choice!
