i had a set of magnetic signs made, two each; no brakes, no oil, no antifreeze i keep them stuck to the lift and when i drain oil or antifreeze or disable the brakes i stick them to the drivers door near the handle. reminded me more than once.
That really sucks and I know the feeling. I crushed one of my 56s fender when I was moving assembled front clip with a forklift. I did not notice that it moved on the forks and the top of fender tucked it's self under fork carraige. When I sat it down it folded the right side inward. I got lucky and was able to save it, but just like you I was sick all that day and evening.
Too bad! Reminds me of when I tried to start my 55 truck directly from the solenoid and I forgot it was on drive and it almost starts... scared the s**t out of me... we all need to learn from each others mistakes. Good luck fixing it.
At least that's better than having your new motor overheat on the highway with no where to get off the side. Then when you think it's about to explode! you turn the key off doing 60 mph to stop it from getting hotter. Only to realize your steering wheel just locked, you're in a slight corner headed for the side poles. Your pulling the wheel so hard to the left you can't unlock the wheel. WHAM!!! at about 45mph....catch one of those little Kryptonite poles right in the center of the right fender your 39 GM coupe with nice custom paint job!!AHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! car flies sideways on the highway, cars going everywhere, door flies open, hanging on to that locked steering wheel for my life...forgot the seat belt! Only the right fender, right side hood, edge of right door, right side grill, center grill, radiator, battery, misc inner panels. 5 1/2 months, still can't find parts. Sigh..........got out the torch!!! At least when it was done, couldn't tell it was ever hit.....
Glad no one was hurt! Lessons can be learned and cars can be fixed! You are forgivin'! Good excuse to buy a 'glass tilt nose for that '55!
Most of us have at one time or another on quite a few different threads going about being stupid... I have a few too! Just never drove a car with no brakes while more concerned about making it pretty...
Had a farmer up the road that drained the oil in his tractor, left for lunch.. Mean time, his helper arrived to go work ground! 30k for a new motor........
WHAT THE HELL...who gives a shit about the 55, they make all the replacement parts for that, I want to know about the 40's pop machine. How bad is it? Sure hope you have plans to rebuid it!!! I also want to add, the thread is useless without pics....no pics, never happened.
I wish it never happened LOL. The pop machine will survive, it dented the stainless trim at the top but other than that no harm. Should still keep the beer cold this summer no problem! Here is an updated thread with pics, just not of the car tore up. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=563586 Its all fixed and hopefully get some paint on her this weekend. By the way, brakes were the first thing I finished when I went out and worked on it again.
As far as posting it on the internet, what the hell, we've all done stupid shit, if one person thinks twice before moving a car even a car length like me without brakes and they remember this and decide against it, mission accomplished.
Gotta have brakes and steering... everything else after that... as I have been told many times... On a side note, my bone-head move was installing an autostart on a stick shift Mustang.... ever see a car drive across the parking lot and hit a pole by itself? oops
I'm sure a lot of us have done something kinda stupid and got away with it. This is just a reminder that it cam eventually catch up to us. I know every time I get lucky I am pretty relieved, and every time I don't I'm always thinking how stupid it was to try. Glad it's repairable and nobody got hurt!
Dang that sucks......I watched my grandma back right in to my 37 chevy truck, she knew she hit it, put the car in drive and took off like nothing......She had brakes. I was laughing my ass off!!!
