"I was gonna write it myself,cuz our friends are too busy and our enemies are more than ready!" That was the original plan,but we have our hands full with dusting off and piecing together 25-30 years of art as it is... The project is a book about Johnny ace Studios...this is gonna be tough because we have worked behind the scenes for the majority of this time and no one really knows us... The idea is to have essays/ramblings/whatever that correspond with the art timewise...and theme-wise... We are not masters of self-promotion,but hey, we gotta eat too ! And we have given up on any gallery creeps or magazines to take any notice of us... So we are going for the offer while it is being extended... We need someone who understood Roth,worked for him,knows the trials and tribulations of that whole world....Someone who knows and loves that period of American culture BEFORE hippies.... Man, what a great response! Dave, we certainly appreciate your offer and generosity... Johnny and I have this mental and verbal shorthand we communicate in... much like two stagecoach drivers who know when to shoot without even saying anything... either that, or two circus oddities who speak a very bizarre but completely understood language. Unfortunately, it doesn't translate well either narratively or descriptively - and the publisher might not appreciate carney stream of conscious caffeine-speak Also, let's get some shits and giggles out of the way before anyone gets the wrong idea about our project - and the involvement of the HAMB: The publisher and the majority of people who may buy this book don't know what the Jalopy Journal or HAMB are... We're not trying to be "cool" by including HAMB talent. The fact is that we want something we can be proud of and to overlook the fact that there is IMMENSE talent on this board would be a mistake. So having gotten that area of discussion out of the way, we hope to work with as many of you as possible and we hope this project can possibly lead to other books on subjects we have wanted to cover for many years. Germ was asked to cover a subject he knew through experience...and maybe he will cover the "Cash-Fink" era for us....believe it or not there WAS life before that endlessly-hyped kustom kulture art show in the 90's....jeez,I was working for Roth when coop was still in Oklahoma doing rodeo flyers....are we Snobs? Elitists?Gimmick-Meisters? Nope....I just don't want to ever look back and be ashamed of having LIED about my career to anyone...about Roth,about the skateboard industry,about anything.... We keep seeing this guy on ebay refer to himself as "Ed Roth's Artist".....it seems that a brief involvement with an aborted project is enough to earn yourself a TITLE.... The BAD part about this whole thing is that someone is gonna have to TALK to us about our work...And a REAL INTERVIEW,like Rodders Journal gave "Mescaline-Fink" awhile back....but we aren't colored like Marsha Brady's panties,all flowers and daisies...we are more like the two old guys on the Muppets,only without the warmth.... In any case,the involvement of those offering writing services is a much appreciated boost to this project....

I met the man once, and had a bizarre conversation about various subjects from fiberglass "legends" race cars to flathead fords. I need to knock some rust off the ol' right side of my brain, anyhow.

The GWT (grammatical wind tunnel) is down for a software upgrade, so I took it into the back of the shop, pounded the required commas into place with a technique known as planishing grammar, and then smoothed it out a tad by running it through the English wheel. Hey everybody... We're actually responding to this post from ModernBeat's old stomping grounds here in Houston... We look in vain for traces of his beard and well coiffed 'do... but he is gone... gone... gone. Yet, many discussions concerning "beat" vs. "beatnik" still linger in our minds... to know he walked these floors and answered these phones is a small comfort... but somehow it is just enough for now. Thank you for the myriad of colorful responses and playful jests... not to mention the ever-welcome sex talk from Minnesota (Mlle. Kali is about 5 seconds from giving you a good over the knee strapping, HRBG) On a sidenote, Johnny used a plasma cutter for the first time today and had to be restrained from cutting everything in sight... such was his joy with this wonderful tool.
