Im sorting through my Books and Magazines, and looking at all the names and ***les I realise how many of my favorite Writers and Journalists have p***ed away. Allan Stanniforth Carrol Smith Gray Baskerville lil' John ****era Dennis Jenkinson Jan Apetz But fortunalely we still have some good ones. Doug Nye Pat Ganahl Which ones are your favorites?
Borgeson...though not always technically accurate Dees...sad loss Karlslake...Racing Voiturettes was sorta let down technically, but everything else is good. Pomeroy...Grand Prix Car, Vol 1 & 2, nuff said.
Gray Baskerville for sure. I expect to add Mr. Carnine to my list, as I want to read his works. Pat Ganahl is always enjoyable. I expect to add to my list as I think of more....... Books need illustrators, Pete Millar is a fave of mine, as is George Trosley.
This one is sooo hard for me... There are so many guys that I look up to. I'll give it a shot. Favorite tech writer ever: Barney Navarro (Don Francisco is a close second) Favorite living tech writer: Mike Bishop Favorite feature writer ever: Ken Gross Favorite Editorial writer ever: Dean Batchelor Favorite living editorial writer: I have 10 of them... I think...
I've always enjoyed the wit and humor of Gray "Basketcase" and Steve "Magneto", my 2 all time favorites. I miss all the good advice and the stories that poured out of "c9" Jay's mind. A great fellow! Roger Jetter is another entertaining writter.
Ganahl's always been a favorite. Did he pawn his Royal typewriter or ease off into retirement or ? Sure wish he'd write more than the occasional RJ article(that I've seen).
My dad and ****era were buds from way back, I always looked forward to seeing him at the Chili Bowl in Tulsa. Cool dude, even when I was 12 years old I could tell the stuff in his shop was above normal in the cool category. I still have alot of Smiths books. Excellent writer.
The very best writers ARE readers... And I'm easy to please: Henry Gregor Felsen, Michael Crichton, Steve Hendrickson and Jay Carnine (C9)... Thanx for the kudos 2manyprojects... R-
Along with some of the names mentioned...Ganahl, Gross, Baskerville and Burnham...I'd mention Tony DeFeo as one of my favorites. His Tech, Muscle Car and Racing work back in the late 80's era New York books was great reading for me at the time. And it still holds up...there was a thread about his stuff on here awhile back. Also would mention Steve Collison from Super Stock and Drag Illustrated and Cole ****ce always keeps me interested till this day. Ro McGonegal has always done alot good stuff over the years too....
Learned a lot and was influenced by these guys...not to mention entertained by them. Used to enjoy "In Bill's Eye" by Bill Burnham. He was opinionated, but knew what he was talkin' about. He is one of the first journalists that I remember predicting the return in popularity of the traditional hot rods. He was right.
Robert C. Post, author of one of my favorite books - High Performance: The Culture and Technology of Drag Racing 1950-1990 And how could I leave out Brock Yates.
Roger Huntington, Don Francisco, Racer Brown...I read everything I could find, sort of memorized the stuff I didn't understand until I ran into something that explained it...
Cole ****ce for his originality. Some of the words he used weren't even printed in a dictionary and i came to the conclusion that he probably stood too close to the headers of a nitro car. I looked forward to every issue of SS&DI.
****ce, Egan, Defeo, Ganahl, Magnate, Yates (I may not agree with him, but the guy founded Cannonball!) and Condor can put words together well, although I don't know how full his resume is...
