The names, terminology are from the early drag classes - most of which are still around ie did you know there are still A/FX cars racing? - anyway try to find an older rule book, say pre'85ish, and the terminology will make more sense. NHRA lumped all these unique classes into what is known as 'Competition Eliminator' the componants of 'Comp' are altereds, street roadsters, non-fuel funny cars & dragsters, modified production, factory experimental, gassers (sometime befor 1990 they combined gassers and altereds into just one class), and other purpose-built race cars. These classes exist today, for example the '36 dodge is an 'altered' while the dragster in his avatar is a 'nostalga dragster'.
I don't ever remember a 'fuel coupe' class although there might well have been one but things were treacherous enough with the fuel altereds and Wally Parks might have been a little nervous about having one of them things pull up to the line all crackling and pounding with the driver strapped inside and no easy way to get him out when shit happens.
One of the differences between a gasser ands an altered is fenders, gasser gotta have fenders and altereds don't.
