wrong spring?

Just test-fitted the front spring I bought at Hershey and it doesn't fit in the Model A frame I have. So this means two things: I don't have a Model A front spring, and I didn't really do my homework beforehand.

So someone tell me what I spent $35 on. It's 2" wide, 35 3/4" from eye to eye (unladen, obviously), 12 3/8" tall and uses 10 severaly tapered leaves.

    Deuce? Something else?

I could probably still use it if I clearanced the A crossmember, though I wonder if it's too tall? I'm just looking for a stock-height spring for my rod.

    thanks,

hmm. that helps some. I'm using a 37-40 I-beam, which is 38 1/2" between spring perch boss centerlines. going by Posies' logic, I should have a spring that measures 33 1/2" between centerlines. So I guess the spring I bought is completely wrong then? that ****s.

    thanks for the help, OCS.

I'm pretty sure Model A front springs are 1 3/4".
    At 12 3/8" tall,with 10 leaves,perhaps you have a rear spring for something.

I'd trust Posie's measurements. I've ordered several springs from him and when I've given the perch dimensions and application I've always gotten the right spring.

Yup, 1 3/4" wide, 33 1/2" long. Get the reversed eyes while you're at it for an extra inch of drop. The stock spring for your axle is 2" wide and meant for spring in front so you need a special made spring to put it on top with the model A crossmember. I need the same spring and came up with the same measurments. You'll also need the LONG perches if you're splitting 39 bones. They're thicker above the axle than earlier Model A bones.

The stock A spring is only 31 1/2" long so it won't work with the later axle either. Order a spring like I mentioned above and it'll work. Don't plan on the lower shock mounts that bolt on the spring perch with split bones tho. Not enough thread even on the long perches due to thickness of the bones. Probably work fine with hairpins or split Model A bones. Model A bones aren't nearly as heavy or long as the later bones so I didn't use them.

Check out mine so far here:

    Joe-
thanks, man. good information. I realize now, though, that I neglected to mention that I plan to mount the spring behind the axle, to the split bones (I have a couple pairs to choose from, both of unknown vintage), the way somebody on the board did it recently (60's style?). maybe I should re-read his tech post on that.

so I need a 1 3/4" wide spring. I suppose I should mock up and measure some more, huh? I'd really like to find an existing spring rather than have a custom one made.

    thanks,
    dan
