I go to get my mail today, and in it is a notice from DMV about the expired reg. on my 56 poncho. It says that if I dont remit payment before the end of the month, that law enforcement can come impound and auction my vehicle. Now I have had registration that has been expired for way longer than six months before and never seen anything like this. Is this part of their new plan to get rid of the old cars? They should impound all those damn H3 piles o useless. Oh well, I guess I ll just pay it, but damn threats of impound and auction just for registration.

It seems fair to impound my car for expired reg? I understand the penalties for late payment, thats fine but they can't just take my stuff thats not cool with me.

In Oklahoma, we have a "black tag" for cars that don't move. You don't have to have proof of insurance, and you get a black year sticker to put on the plate.

Bottom line, if it isn't complete junk, you have to pay to own a car in America. Get a salvage title if you just want to use it for a flower pot.

I'm glad they found a real accountant in California, so they can finally collect from the dead-beats.

Seems fair to me. You just get off the boat?

If you don't pay taxes and fees, they (Uncle Sam) take your property and auction it off. Write that down mate...

my brother has a 72 blazer he had not paid tags on in a year...went down to the dmv with proof of insurance and intent to pay his registration and get the sticker so he could move it to his new house.

get this...the dmv refunded him 2 bucks and gave him a sticker. he insisted there is a mix up and the dmv counter guy insisted there is not a mix up...so my brother took his two bucks and walked out with his tags.

    yeah this was cali too...

  10. Fair, isnt the right word, I agree, but obviously this does not happen to the first time offender, you must have had some other issues, before, like the six month unpaid bill.
DMV is a pain in the ass, but take care of it. Don't loose your car over this.

Uh, I don't mean to be obtuse, but how does that seem fair? Ultimately, the car itself is personal property. The fees are more in regards to the use of the car, are they not?

That kinda seems like the cable company taking your television, 'cause you're late on the bill...

should of put a non-op on it instead of let the tag go on late....that wouldve prevented the letter.

I got the same letter but it was because I dropped my insurance. I sold my Harley to a buddy. He had six months to pay me. I have the bike locked in my garage till paid in full. I dropped my insurance because it wasn't being riden. My tags were still good. They said they would impound if I didn't renew my insurance and give them proof or non-op it. Insurance companies are required to notify the dmv when you drop your insurance now. It started Jan1st..So I guess it is better to never insure or reg. your car so they don't know about it. this is why i'm pissed.....i PAID the registration for '06, the DMV would not send my tags/registration because i didn't have insurance...i didn't have insurance because i wasn't driving the truck. That's fine i didn't have a problem with that, i was going to get it insured ASAP. well about a week later i pulled the truck out of the garage and parked it in front of my house in order to clean my garage out...i was also building more shelves and i needed the room. The truck had no engine and the front fenders/hood were off...the next day while i was at work a rookie officer had the truck towed because it was an "abandoned" vehicle. there was no warning to move the truck, there was no way of knowing if it was insured or registered because i had the plates in my garage...so i don't know how he ran anything through the DMV. He basically assumed that the truck was abandoned.....my neighbors even ran over to my house and asked the officer if they could push my truck into my driveway...the officer declined. to make matters worse i came home and there was no copy of a ticket or any type of paperwork...i had to call every tow company in town in order to locate the truck. I paid all of my "storage" fees and asked the police dept. if there was anything else that i needed to do, they said no.....3 months later i get a notice from the courts stating that i need to pay $300 because i didn't go to the courthouse and show proof of registration.....my truck was insured the day after it was towed....the DMV was contacted in order to recieve my registration/tags that was already paid for....instead of sending me my tags the DMV sent me this "deliquent" notice.....

Fight the ticket and bring all proof of what you had stated on here that I just read. Go in with a calm and relaxed 'tude and look good in front of the judge. Why pay more $$$ when it is uncalled for! I agree. The state and the DMV are trying more and more to squeeze out of the average joe like you and me.

non-op is for sure the way to go if youre gonna drop insurance. you dont get a new tag, but it keeps 'em off your back. and when the car is ready for a tag show proof of insurance, and get your sticker.

Yep. You should've just paid the PNO fee if you couldn't afford the whole reg.

I'm not saying it's "fair". But it's just one of those things. Wuddayagonnado.

Like Dreadman said, fair or not, don't lose your car over it dude.

    NO SHIT.
The Gov. doesn't OWN your car.

....now if they bought the car for you, that would be different.

A person should be able to own a car without driving/insuring or registering it.

The television comparison is a damn good one.

    I mean WTF?

They don't own your car, correct.

But the majority of voters have decided that the state can tax your car and home ownership, so in fact they never own your car or house, but they sell it to someone who is willing to pay the taxes and fees when you refuse to.

Simple Gov. in action. God Bless America, John Wayne, and Apple Pie...

Thanks for that Tingler, I was thinking my posts were only visible to me.

I suppose the same concept that is applied when the gov't grabs your house for breaking the law is at work here. I gotta say I like it when cars are registered and insured, especially when they drive into my car.

Still, the seizure and sale of personal property over a fairly affordable infraction seems pretty rough.

And, yeah, I know a non-op is pretty cheap - that is kinda not the point I am getting at...
Recardo, some rules of law imply that selling is act reserved for an owner. Their are more than a few cases in the works, especially tied to eminent domain, with implications on gov't claims to property.
I guess we're getting to a political discussion. I'll shut up.

Yes, I am aware of the simplicity of the PNO, but it was just one of those things that slipped through the cracks. I have been traveling about ten months out of the year for work purposes, and it just got overlooked. As I said before, I am totally fine paying the penalties for being late, and accept the fact that I alone missed the payments but seriously auction my car for late payment is a little excessive.

And no Recardo I am not fresh off the boat.

this all sounds so crazy, what difference would it make to the state if your car was insured or lisenced for the road as long as you could prove ownership, i have a yard full of cars and only one has current plates and insurance. ok Canada is different then the US, i just wonder who would gain from this law? the auto makers?, EPA? someone lobbied for this the State didnt just dream it up.

I Don't Believe Your Police Dept Can Come Inside Your Garage And Tow Your Vehicle, The Law Has Been Around For A While That If You Have A Vehicle That Is Six Months Delinquent In Registration, It Could Be Towed. If It Is In Your Driveway, That Is Another Issue, Your City Ordinance May Be More Restrictive And Allow Your Vehicle To Be Towed If You Have Expired Tabs. That Is How It Is In The City I Work In. All I Can Say Is I Have Never Given A Ticket Or Towed A Hotrod....but I Am Slightly Biased
