I've been buying and selling cars/trucks in ohio for 20 years. In just the last two years, I've been sent TWO "Random insurance requirement" notices by the State of Ohio BMV in the last TWO years. Failure to prove ins in effect as of the date of the letter means you lose your license. I have stuff I drive only in the summer and used to keep plates on, but now its not worth the risk. I've been fine both times, but if you have a decent car that you only drive in the summer, good luck not insuring it for those months it sits in a barn/garage.

    Get This:

    Jan 3, 2007 - I buy a 1992 ext cab 1500 GMC truck to fix and flip
Jan 8, 2007 - I go to BMV to transfer the ***le into my name. They say, "THIS ***LE IS INACTIVE, ITS BEEN SALVAGED in NORTH CAROLINA as of 12/18/06"
I say "********! Its sitting in the parking lot! See!!!"
The previous owner bought it 1/06 and its never been out of ohio.

It took over 25 calls to the Ohio and NC BMV offices over 3 weeks to unravel this.

Turns out NC issued a salvage ***le on a vin that was one digit off from the one I bought. The number they punched in by accident was mine. Although both states admitted with two days that my truck had no problem, they were both lost as to how to fix it. "Un-salvaging" a VIN in this new inter-state system is not impossible, but damn close.

  2. I missed this thread the first time it was posted, but just went thru all the pages.Heres one i didnt see happen to anyone else(but me)..I got a letter from my payroll dept. at work from the Ca. State Tax Board DEMANDING payment for a reg.on a car i dont drive. They told my work to attach my wages for the full amount.(120.00)I had never heard of such a thing before.I too didn't file a non-op or have insurance on said car,but come on,did they really have to resort to neo-Mc Carthyism?(haha)
