I just recieved a large number of photos from a great uncle who was in ww2 and worked on bombers and such at the time.

anyways, I could not believe my eyes at the number of close-ups of nose art in the box.

one of them is of the lady luck.......exactly like i see in the hot rod paintings... with the wrench in her hand, two eight balls for bikini top, and the horse shoe.

where did she originate ?did a company create her to sell something? or was this b-25 bomber i'm looking at with her on it famous?

I'll try to scan it later but the nose art on this 65 year old picture looks exactly like this girl.

    wow?

    really?

all my mom said is that Jack (the uncle) was stationed in Phillipines for most of the war so i imagine that's where the planes are sitting at.... he was a photographer as a small hobby so i guess that's why he took such good close ups. I'm home from college and my mom just suprised me with them when i came in the door,

  6. These pictures and several more were in an album made from some sheet metal from a japanese zero and tied together with parachute cord. It was a very interesting collection. [IMG]

  7. Yes, please do scan those in.
Some of us motorheads have engines that leave the ground. [IMG]

My other hobby is WWII aircraft, so I would love to see your uncles pics.

cool, thanks for the info guys.

I'm gonna figure out they're new all in one machine to scan them for you guys.

but one thing i discovered, is that more than one bomber had the lady luck girl with the 8 ball tits and wrench in her hand......... so it must of come from some logo from a company, or something.

but the nose art of her that i have is the best one i've seen yet.

i promise to post them by early tomorrow morning (eastern time) i just got here a few hours ago. but could not wait to ask about them.

Here's what I can tell you about Lady Luch. The pictures I posted are of a p-38 fighter of the 479th fighter squadron based in England in 1944. The Lady Luck image painted on it was done by Fred Hayner (Hayner the Painter). H ewas the squadron painter of the 479th, and also did most of the nose art for that squadron. He told me that he painted it on at the pilot's request. He got the picture of Lady Luck from a matchbook cover from when he was in New Orleans. Fred recreated these images for me before his death a few years ago.

There was a B-17 named Lady Luck with the 385th at Great Ashfield in England where my Dad was 1943-45. Just checked the listings in my B-17 nose Art Book, there was a total of 17 different B-17's named Lady Luck, three named Lady Luck II, and one Lady Luck III.

Fred Hayner was in england and only did fighters,Something that I found intersting is the newer picture lady luck holds her wrench in her left hand.Fred told me that the picture came on a match book cover from a bar in New Orleans.

    that's cool.

It's kinda weird how quickly the lady luck girl spread because it was on so many planes from european theatre to pacific theatre... and people did not have internet then.

so how did it spread so quickly? the only thing i can think of is that that either..

    1. the armed forces magazine must of showed a photo of Fred's nose art during war and quickly spread in popularity.

    or

    2. the lady luck girl that fred says he saw on a matchbook cover from bar in new orleans was an already well known symbol from somewhere

    thanks again for your info....

Maybe one of the guys who did the nose art got shipped from Europe to the Pacific or vice versa.

the germans are the ones that started the shark teeth on their planes... ME-109's had a lot of them....

maybe this knowledge will help your search.

Just one slight correction, those all appear to be B-24's. A lot larger airplane than the B-25. [IMG]

Great bunch of pictures! Thanks for sharing.
