Again another OT topic by me but I have this item I want to sell. the story: Cleaning out my garage and going through boxes of my mothers stuff left to me after she p***ed. In a box I see some lace so I check it out and it is this pillow case. As you can guess it surprised me a bit because this is not something that went with my mothers personality or thinking. So I had it looked at and checked for authenticity and it does indeed meet the requirements and dating that would equate to WWII Germany. the appraisal value ws a bit more than I had expected. So how would I go about trying to sell this item? I have no use for it and really don't want it, but I don't want to give it away either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Well if I knew where to ask I wouldn't ask here would I? so if you have a suggestion I would be more than open to the help. I just figured since a lot of you on here deal with antique and war era items I might get a little knowledge
I don't know in the US, you would be best served by doing a net search for militaria sellers. Anything genuine WWII Nazi is worth money. Contact someone like this http://www.militarywarehouse.net/ Just be careful, if they know your not into this sort of thing they will try to screw you (Not necessarily tis mob, but militaria collectors in general) Doc.
thanks doc, I am approaching this very carefully because I know how the system works to a degree with selling unknown items. I am hoping to find some more info out about it so I have some kind of history to go with it, but these kinds of items are hard to research.
I've used Mikey Hughes Militaria, which I think was in Scottland?? Anyways, the point is that there are many reputable people dealing in WWII, and specifically Nazi related items. If you aren't comfortable keeping it, and my suggestion would be to keep it, you could offer it on consignment through a dealer. I don't know what the appraised value was, but unless it was a government issued item it won't be worth much. There is a lot of homegrown stuff floating around, and although it may be legit and period correct, interest by collectors is minimal. I'd contact a reputable dealer.
Now, we do know that the ******** was a good luck symbol and even used by the Boy Scouts prior to WWII? eBay is over there ----> www.eBay.com - try and find something similar and get an idea what it goes for. Or wait for Antiques Roadshow to come through, a lot of those shows and sales will have experts you're allowed to bring one or two items to them to have identified and appraised.
Yes the ******** was used in many religions and still is used in fact. The difference is the turned ******** denotes use as a symbol for the nazis. I have already checked ebay and nothing like it and the AR doesn't come anywhere near me anytime soon.
Even some of the regular shows have guys to do that now... or you could have a dealer come look. Tell 'em you want to sell it and see what they offer, odds are if it's good enough they'll make a solid offer up front you'd be able to double or triple it on your own.
I think you need to do a lot more research until you find someone that specializes in that era for clothing and such. That's not military. The tank and gun boys won't help you much. You should seriously consider getting it to antiques roadshow sometime. Don't rush just because you found it's highly valued.
Yeah, more research, and if you're not in a hurry to sell it, wait for the right buyer. Ebay wont let you post something like that without blacking/blurring out the ********. However, as said before, there are plenty of individuals out there who would be very interested in obtaining that piece, despite the "home grown" origin. No idea where your mother got it? Did your grandfather bring it home from the war? If it is some trophy he or another family member brought back, I personally would consider holding onto it. More as recognition of their sacrifice, not for it's inherent object value as a piece of Nazi history. My grandfather has a giant silk rising sun flag stuffed into a can that he pulled off a deceased Japanese pilot. He's still got it, it might even be worth something to somebody, but when he p***es, should it come into my posession, I'm not going to sell it knowing what he had to go through to get it.
********...did you know that one American Army unit had the ******** on its shoulder patch at the beginning of WWII?? It was from New Mexico, National Guard or Army reserve...the ******** was there via its use by American Indians, who were heavily represented in the ranks. It was quickly deleted...
I agree, keep it. with most nazi stuff i ***ume being detroyed, it is a unique piece. Whether its good or bad it comes from a very signifigant part of history.
You need to lighten up a little.. Maybe if he started the topic with O/T then you wouldnt have even looked at the post seeing you dont care anyway. Nightshade : I cant help on where to go to sell it but the other guys gave you some good info. And I learned some stuff about the ******** too. Dave
I agree with gl***guyOC. This is waaaaayyyy too O/T for here. This is an automotive related forum. Maybe I'm being a *****, but O/T around here should at least have a gleam of automotive infomation. I'm not a moderator, but that's just my opinion. The bandwidth should be saved for other topics. I have some stuff I would like to get information on that's completely non-related to anything here and I'm not going to post them here just because I don't know where else to go. Not blasting anyone, so don't get all excited. I just think things get a little off topic a little too often sometimes. Again, just my opinion...
Showing anything marked with the symbol is actually illegal in a number of European countries. Those laws affect all sorts of stuff--if you buy a model kit of a Messerschmitt it will lack the ******** decals you'd get here...serious bad memories in a lot of places make them pretty sensitive!
Try asking around at the forum at http://www.wehrmacht-awards.com/forums/index.php. You won't find a more knowledgeable group of WWII militaria collectors anywhere on the web.
check again - as I've stated before, the offending smbols have to be taken out of the photo. And as mentioned you could get in deep dirty trouble to get caught purchasing or even owning that in the EU. Eisenfaust - that was just bad.
I just typed in nazi on ebay and I got 2239 items listed so they must let you list nazi items. I agree I would do some serious research first.
Try checking out this site & maybe they can help you..... http://www.germaniainternational.com/evalsid.html. One question tho, if you had it appraised, wouldn't the appraiser know who / where to sell it ? Otherwise how could he appraise its value? Good Luck getting the info you need ! To the O/T Police: The problem with " O/T " posts is there are too many people that post in them that have no reason to do so. So if its OT to you, ignore it & it will go to page 3 pretty damn fast. Some people either have other interests besides hotrods and / or are willing to help someone with a question.
The swastica was a good luck symbol long before Hitler used it as his own. That pillow could have been made in the 30's by an Amish lady. One guy at work had a odd looking tool with a swastica on it and thought it was some odd nazi torture device. I googled it and it turned out in the 20' and 30's there was a tool company down south that had that as there symbol/trademark. Something old having a swastica on it doesn't even begin to make it a nazi piece. CHAZ
They had pink ********s on the desert cam fighters, the colour they used faded to pink fast in the sun and mad for better camm than the original colour. Thats why the poms use pink on there desert vehicles and helicopters these days. Doc.
I agree probably not the place lots of net places for it as well as in the back of VFW and military monthly's , I'm thinking it not nazi related tho, probably pre WWII , I have a few real Nazi items myself from my biker days (including a gold plated Hitler cameo wall plaque, full size swazi flag ,arm bands, daggers medals and bayo's) and have done some buying and selling, none of which is in or for public veiwing,no I am NOT a closet nazi I'm a history and war history buff trying to save some small part of history, unpopular ? for sure, bad ?definatley, but still history, Any relatives in GER during the war? or maybe in the SW US? Over religeous great grandma? ,one thought, prior to WWII the nazi movement was very BIG here (B4 we found out what THEY were doing) in the lt twenties to mid thirties, it just may have been made at that time, the KKK did'nt start with the swazi until the 50's or early sixties when they joined w pseudo nazi's (wanna be's) so its doubtful its KKK memorbilia, A local church here built prior to WWI had them OS all along its upper border all the way around the building , they had them chisled off this last year. This nazi phobia is getting way out of hand, JMO, a bunch of german ***holes and a bitter past doesn't make a ancient symbol of faith and luck evil.Anyway good luck w your sale my advice track it down FIRST then look into selling it via a reputable dealer.
******** had thousands of years of history all over, places from ancient India to American Indians, and 11 years of ***ociation with evil... It does look decorative, feminine, and old on that pillow, so pre-Hitler origin does seem like a real possibility without any known provenance...but it is also reminiscent of the commercially-made sentimental decorated pillows sold as tacky gifts for Mom in military PX's during WWII and since, so a vaguely military origin still seems a possibility... Off-topic as all get-out, but certainly part of the HAMBish interest in history, old oddities, and puzzles related to those.
