What's your thought? Angle bracing off a stock center crossmember? What are you doing transmission wise?

Here is my Dagles X member. It is just tacked in place in this picture. Still missing the top plate that goes in the middle.

Here are a few shots from when I installed a '38 x-member to my A frame. More pics on my build thread...

I had to add a crossmember in an original 50's build. I finally found a use for old Model T axles.... just tacked in now.

I'm gonna go ahead and say hell no to using chopped up T axle pieces as a K member...even if you knew how to properly weld a forged piece of steel, it's still ugly and offers a lot less rigidity than the other options out there...if you can't buy some tubing and make a proper K member, then find someone who can...or learn from someone...I sure wouldn't want my suspension mounted to that...

Here's a post of when the truck came in. Neat old build.

Sorry for the thread hijack, didn't know it would create a ****storm. If anybody wants the strength calculations for the added k member, feel free to PM. It's waaaay stronger than a simple crossmember.

  14. Sorry to say but this looks sooooo rough. Everyone elses looks awesome. Especially what "oldsboy" did with his, that looks so spot on.. looks like it came from the factory that way.

Heres how i did mine. I have since filled the notched area in the front of the original Model A cross member. Will notch the rear when it gets blown apart again.

I'd run the "simple crossmember" gimpy's hot rods posted in a heartbeat over the chopped up axle mess...I'm no engineering expert, but I fail to see how that is strong enough for anything...you could tell me a 1/2" rod of ***anium is stronger than a 2x3 tube, and I'm still gonna pick the tubing just for the fact that you have that much more surface area mating to the frame to provide support and strength...

I did the Dagels thing too. Their boxing plates and X member. A little spendy, but saved me a ton of time. Everything fit good. SOLID to say the least.

I used a Dagels x member and boxing plates. Had to modify the trans mount because the car sits low.

You guys are funny. Henry's forged vanadium ductile steel is about the best material available, and certainly better than Chinese/Indian welded mild steel tubing available now. The trans mount needs to hold 10x the expected static load, or about 2000#. An easy check is to lift the entire car using the crossmember only as the lift point. Even with just the tack welds it handled it easily.... and forged Ford axles weld beautifully, ask any midget racer....

Everybody has an opinion, but don't tell me what is/isn't safe if you haven't done the ****ysis.

Still in mock-up stage. Made from pieces of extra A rails. trans mount will span across the legs and the split wishbones will attach to the bottom of the angles.

I've been eyeballing the Dagel X member for my Model A. I figure I'll order it with a set of their boxing plates all at one shot and be done with it. A bit of money to spend but I'd probably spend a hundred bucks on gas and another couple hundred to buy one hunting down a usable vintage X member like Oldboy showed. That sure looks good though.

28A you do realized that rat rods are severely frowned on on this forum? I've seen the remains of a number of dirt track modifieds that were campaigned on the local dirt tracks in the 50's and they were pretty crude but nothing like that.

    Started on mine.

Umm..., last time I checked one thing I-beam axles are known for is twisting. So how would that even be a remotely decent way to support a ch***is?

All of the steel that I use is from USA manufacturers.

  28. I wanted to use a stock X member but couldn't find one somewhat local and didn't want to hack up the good frames that I was finding. In the end I went with Dagels and boxing plates from ebay.
