I bought what i think is a 292 Y block and a sm420 granny 4 speed trans. My question is if that is some sort of adapter that mates the 292 to the 4 speed, and if it is an adapter can any other trans be used with that adapter? Thanks

Unless you are planning on pulling a pretty good load I'd venture to say that old granny trans isn't what you want.

That adapter looks a lot like this one on Ebay 300521617035

You should be able to find a stock Y block bellhousing pretty easy for either a car or pickup with a three speed that will handle the regular three speeds or four speed car trans.

That looks like a serious piece! I don't think any passenger or light truck trans will fit.I used a passenger car bell housing on my 292 along with an early narrow bolt pattern T-10.The only mod was to nip about 1/4" off of the input shaft where it goes into the pilot bushing.I got the idea off of the y-block forum. X2 what Bluecollarkustons says and the top pic is a set up you wont be needing for a street rod.

    Not a SM 420 . Either a Warner T-9 or T-98.

The motor and trans are going into a 1948 ford f-1. But im starting to rethink the 4 speed transmission. Can i use the other 4 speed truck bellhousing for any other transmissions? Thanks for all the help.

  10. Best thing if you are using a Y-block is to get the truck three speed bell, then you have a number of options including the T-5 five speed with a few mods. T-10 and early Toploader will fit the pattern with no mods.

just got the numbers off the trans , on the drivers side the numbers are

    W G CO

    T 8 D-1A
    and on the passenger side
    59T-7006
    N 10

But it sounds like i need to source a three speed bell housing from a truck, cause i cant do much with the 4-speed bell housing that i have now.

Does anyone know the years for the T-10 or Toploader? thanks

I would be interested in that adapter if you don't use it and decide to sell it? Thanks, H
