On the way down and the way back from Joplin this weekend, I kept loosing adjustment on 1 rocker arm. I have not torn the thing apart yet to see what the deal is because I am a dedicated employee and have been living at work all damn week. Question is, are there bushings between rockers the shaft? It acted like to me that there was something "wearing down" rather than losing adjustment.

Y blocks are notorious for poor rocker shaft oiling which wipes out the shaft and rocker. It should not happen with a modern multigrade oil but old crud has probably blocked the shaft as well as block passages feeding off the rear of the cam. Parts are available at Mummert and others.

Thanks 286. Yes I had heard that they all had oiling problems. Since this rocker is right in the middle of the shaft and she was oiling on both sides, I thought maybe I had the oiling problem squared away. Who knows how long it was ran with non-detergent and no oil changes before I got it. I will have to tear it down and check it out.

check stud height along all studs to see if one is possibly pulling up, if so, replace with screw in stud.

  6. y-blocks are notorious for the nuts wearing out. they are a lock nut and after years of adjustment they just dont hold well. new ones are availible, i ordered mine from my local napa.

  7. Coluld be cam going flat too!! Common on old y blocks.

I kept loosing adjustment on my Y-block when I first got the coupe on the road, even lost a couple of pushrods. It was the adjusters backing out. I haven't had a problem with it since I changed them all out.
