Technical Y Block Builder in CA

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Nickyz129, Feb 12, 2019.

  1. I agree with you. I seem to remember Squirrel just putting new rings in a Edsel Y block and successfully driving it across country? Back in the day we would in frame overhaul lots of engines. Many of them Y blocks. Pull the heads and have them vatted and a valve job. install new bearings and rear main seal on the Y block. install a overhead oiler kit. maybe have the pistons knurled? after we got a Y block running we adjusted the valve lash after it warmed up. then played with mashing the copper line on the overhead oiler to slow down the flow of oil to keep from starving the bearings. It don't take any all Knowing GURU or special talent or Know how to do a stock rebuild on a Y block. They simply had design flaws. and Yes it does require a (Specialist) and a lot of money to overcome the design flaws and make them into a screaming high HP real fast mill. There are plenty of jobbers who sell rebuilt short and long blocks. Most NAPA stores can get you a rebuilt block that comes with a guarantee. back in the 60,s you could get a rebuilt short block from Sears. a 283 chevy or 292 ford cost $125

  2. Pull the current mill and trans and store them. and get a better mill and keep the hood closed.

  3. Are you certain you have a 272? I seem to remember lots of 55 trucks had a odd ball 256 engine. Ive got one in my hoard that came from a 55 ford Pk.
