first off, hello, my name is jordan. I don't know if this is a place to be asking questions...It just looks cool here, so why not register.

Anyway, I recently purchased a 59 merc with a 312/automatic...or maybe merc-o-matic..and it acutally started after sitting for ten years. Well, the rings are stuck (awesome blowby) and theres a good knock under the valve covers. It will only drive for a few minutes before it starts to smoke and dies.

I was wondering what,if any, other engines could fit in there? I live in a small town, far from a big one, so I can't really locate another 312 or 292. I just want the thing to drive around, and I dont have the time to rebuild or re-ring it.

basically i need pointing in the direction of adapter/motor mounts for another type of ford engine. a 302 or 289 would be 'ok'.

    thanks and hello.

Check out www.yblocksforever.com, if it is working again, it seems to be down for the past couple of days.

Also, there is a yahoo group for Y blocks, www.yahoogroups.com, then do a search for "Y blocks."

As for your question, that knocking noise might be too much slop in the valve train. Any Y block, except maybe the 1954, 239s should just slap right in the same place that the old 312 is in.

A FE motor (352-390-427)should drop in but you won't be able to use the Mercomatic.

Jordon - where you from - more info on your profile would be nice. Not going to rank you on the intro, but a better one would be nice.
