On my 57 rancho, I just found out that the engine is a 312, not a 292.. Thanks to Spooky. Now here's the carb question, I just put a 600 cfm carb on it, not a holley. yeah I know im a dumb ****er. The stock cfm is like 470, holley sells 390cfm then too large. Is the 390 good enough for a daily? Spooky has one on his edsel and says it works fine.? Any comments or words of wisdome.

I'm not really sure what you are asking. Do you think your 600 is too big? Definately not. I just slapped a Holley 600 on my 55's 292. (I THINK it is a 292 also, but if it isn't, I won't be lucky enough for it to be a 312!) It seems to be fine.
I'm wondering what you mean by stock CFM being 470 and why you'd want to put something as small as a 390 on it. What is the problem with the 600 you just put on it? What brand?

The stock cfm carb was 470. the carb im using is a edelbrock and it uses too much fuel and has a horrible acceleration. I even updated to a pertronix and a hot coil. The va***e advance is hooked up to the ported side, I was told thats the way. Is it wrong? I think the thing is timed at 8 or 10. gonna go and chev it if I dont lose my mind first.

  4. Those Edelbrocks are a Carter AFB in disguise, I've always had much better luck with those than with Holleys. They are really easy to tune if you have the kit for it. Does "using too much fuel" mean its running rich, or you're getting ****ty mileage, or both? I think I can help you with that carb if you want me too. AFBs are all I've ever run......

Im no expert on the AFB but a 4bbl with vacuum secondaries is self limiting to a big degree by the engine so 600 is not too big. I ran a 600 Holley on my 292 before going for eye candy and three 94's, ran just fine.

With some brands there is no difference in the primaries venturi over a total cfm rating or two.

Was your Edelbrock new when you put it on, or in used condition? There might be something wrong with it. You might want to switch the advance hoses around a play with it and see if it feels good. I had an Edelbrock 500 on mine before this Holley 600, worked great. 600 shouldn't be too big, I am guessing that there is something wrong with the carb, or you need to make the carb run a bit leaner, different metering rods, maybe.

Might be your distributor. I don't know what you mean that the va***n advance is hooked to the "Ported side' but the va***n advance should be run off the manifold va***n, not carb va***n. I ***ume your running a 57 or later distributor. Only the early (pre 57) stock distributors should be run off the carb va***n and with the stock carb. The early distributors have springs on the same plate as the points. Later distributors have all the springs under the plate as far as I know.

The va***e is on the on demand side, no vac at idle comes on with rpm. Not the full on that drops off when you get on it. The distributor is a stock reman, I checked the advance and it seems to work good. The carb is a new unit, and I just picked up a jet kit that drops it 12%, that only works at open road, not on the acceleration. Whats next metering rods? Anyone ?

  10. James, metering rods are a possibility, but I have had better and more noticeable results by swapping metering rod springs. There is a kit available with several diferent sets of springs. altering the tension adjusts how much vacuum is required to hold the metering rod into the jet. You might want to give it a try, places like Baxter's and Radke's stock the kits for like 6 bucks.
