    Hey there everybody.

This may be a stupid question, and yes I have used the search function, but what is the "sensor" for that screws into the top of the exhaust manifold on a 292 y-block for?

It has what looks like a vacuum line coming off of it, but when I got the car the other end of the line, which is metal and was rusted away, was not hooked up to anything. My guess is that maybe it is supposed to hook onto the heat riser in the manifold.

If that is right, what would that "sensor" be called. This is pretty embarassing as I am a Ford Parts guy for a living, but even asking others here they have no idea.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks guys!!

I believe it is just the heat riser for the choke stove. It would have been a steel line all the way from the manifold to the choke housing, they get twisted off during rework because they rust solid. ROY.

The Y blocks like most early engines used a mechanical heat riser, usually called a "chimney" to operate the automatic choke on the carb. The tube was generally a steel tube that plugged into the exhaust manifold or the heat riser passage on the intake manifold. Very few of these ports were actually drilled all the way into the manifold.

Thanks for the help guys. So here is another question, can i take the heat riser out and just block off the port in the exhaust manifold without hurting anything? Or, would it be better to try and find the parts and re-make the line? I plan on running an electric carb and updated ignition parts, so would I even need it?

    Thanks again for the help.
