Thanks, yeah I would love to see if it would turn over, if so, clean the carb, and see if she will fire
That's what I was worried about, was if the oil pan would clear. Had the same problem in my 62 Chrysler 300 custom project, it has an aftermarket front clip, so I went with the Dodge truck pan on the 440, problem solved.
I make okay money, been doing it for 35 years, took a while to get there, but yeah, I could use more money for sure.
The bottom half of a gm engine is sort of the same shape as a flatty which is why they fit with out too much h***le. Front sump pans are a h***le.
I've put a Y-Block in my 50 Merc project. Its a bit of a snug fit. I had to alter the front cross-member to get the engine in without it sitting at a jaunty angle. I made some unboltable side mounts. Also modified the front engine steady. Notice the dropped steering arm done by a previous owner. I'll re-do that with less of a drop, but it still needs a bit to ensure it clears the sump safely. Stock manifolds help clear everything. Fitting dynamo in stockish location is a squeeze. I found this link invaluable in knowing what I was getting in to! - http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...engine-transmission-mount-fabrication.383227/
Or you get a 302 and AOD and fake it like this guy (he sells the valve cover adapters) and have folks scratching their heads.
Lots of great information guys, wow, sounds like a chore. Well since I am a Mopar guy, what are the odds of sticking a big block 383 Mopar engine in the hole? I already have that engine, came out of my 62 Chrysler 300 custom project, I am sticking a 440 in that car. I mean if I'm going to have to do a bunch of modifying anyway, might as well stick something in there with some beef. The 62 383 was rated at 305HP with a two barrel carb, I can get a 3 dueces set up for that engine, and make it look nostalgic.
This car will have a 440 with dual inline carbs, I'm only about half way done with it, so the Mercury is a back burner project, but I will be working on it too.
The Mercury is going to need floor work anyway, so if I mock it up with the 383 engine and perhaps a 6 speed transmission, I can build the floor and firewall around it. I was told to find a rear end out of a mid 90s Ford Expedition, to get disc brakes and a sold foundation, has anyone done this? Is it a bolt in, or does it need modified?
