I am running a Y-block Marine Interceptor on my 292. The valley pan has a mesh screen at one end that 1 of the air cleaner sets on top of. the bottom of this air cleaner is open to the screen.

So my question is would this act as a PCV system for the engine? I believe that is the purpose of the mesh screen in the valley pan with the air cleaner directly on top of it, but I want to make sure before i block off my crank case vent on the side of the block.

Pictured below is a valley pan from an interceptor set up. 1 pic of the mess on the bottom of the pan and the 2nd pic of the air cleaners bolted down to the valley pan.

The one I took apart was the same and it looks like the whole purpose of it was to remove vapors from inside the engine aswell as engine compartment. More like a aircleaner breather instead of a PCV valve. I would not use it like that in your car, just put some regular filters on and block off the left over holes in the valley pan. But you are going to have to find a way to have a place for the engine to breath and to add oil.

Nick, I have the same setup on my '31 "A" Coupe. I am using the motor as it came out of the cabin cruiser it was in. I am not sure about what you suggested. I defer to the resident motorhead experts on the board. Tim who races at El Mirage and Bonneville might give his opinion. Until then I will be using my Y-Block mill as it came out of the Interceptor plant. My only change was a belt driven water pump mounted off to the left side (oopps - must mean blister in my hood sides). Darn it !

Thats the marine version of a road draft crankcase breather, not a pcv system. There isnt much air movement in the engine compartment of a boat so sucking the crankcase fumes into the carburator was the only solution (at least they were on the right track) pcv didnt come out until the mid 60's.
With the draft set up you need fresh air in (on the side of the block) and crank fumes out (the screen in the valley pan) if you close either one the system isn't going to work.

Oh and how are you going to put oil in with those valve covers? I guess pulling the flame arrestor and pouring the oil into the screen in the valley cover will work, but I think its going to get old after a while.
