OK, so it's been a few years since I got my 55 Ford Customline from my dad. It's a mild custom. I want it to be a more period correct mild custom though. At least from the outside.

So, the mid-70's 302 is coming out, and I was able to purchase a complete, running 292 Y-block. It is out of a 1964 F100, but I feel I'm going to have to wash it down and investigate it as I found this tag on the side of the block. So, I would assume it means the engine has been rebuilt at some time in the past. I can guess most of the information, .60 over, 10 and 10 on the bearings.

Want to swap to a modern automatic w/ overdrive. I've already found a couple of sources for adapter plates, but any comments on them would be appreciated.

So, I'm guessing this shouldn't be to tough of a "swap." Originally, a 6 cylinder car w/ 3 manual on the tree. Currently has a mid-70s Ford 302, w/ C4 behind it. Car is sitting under a car cover outside for now, and it'll be a week or so before I get to do much.

I'm going to keep the engine bone stock, and running, until the swap is complete. Just going to clean it up, and put different exhaust on it. Want to get some miles on the combo before I start tweaking anything else. Future would be probably a 4 barrel manifold and some dress up. It sounded good in the video before it was pulled (last Friday.)

    Any advice would be appreciated...
    Thanks in advance :)

That is a NICE 55. The motor you have needs some parts to make it fit. First, pull the front pulley and remove the front motor mount. Its not needed on the passenger car. Next, replace the oil pan and oil pickup pipe with one for a car, (front sump). Then, install new passenger motor mounts. With the factory dual exhaust, it would be a good time to install new spark plug wires and passenger looms to keep the wires away from the exhaust. The Y block is a good reliable fun motor to play with. Have fun.

Along with everything Old don mentioned a car dipstick goes in the front cover. The truck engine you have has the dipstick that goes in the side of the block. You can see it in the picture with the engine tag. Get a car front cover & dipstick and plug the hole in the block where the dipstick is now.
One other thing. 55 cars had vacuum wipers that run off a double action fuel pump. Your truck engine has a single action pump. Not a big deal you can always run the wipers off manifold vacuum. They just stop for a bit when you step on the gas when you hook them up like that. But with a car that looks like that I wouldn't be driving in the rain anyway.

  5. That is one very nice 55 ,good to see a Y block going in.

  6. Very nice '55! Can you post up some more pics of outside/inside?

http://www.y-blocksforever.com/Links.html has an adaptor to use the C4 behind the y-block. makes a great combo. The Y-block has mushroom lifters, if you have any idea's of a cam change it needs to be done before the engine is installed. You have to put them in from the bottom. Great car.

thanks for the information all you guys. thanks for the compliments to.

slowly a list of parts is developing.

here is a question, how much difference between a C4, and AOD lengthwise (sorry to lazy right now to lookup.) I have a C4, and if they aren't much different, I could do the fab work pretty quick then.

There is only 1/4" in length so no drive line change is needed the only exception is some Lincoln AOD's were 1 1/4" longer

Great to se a 302 and c4 getting tossed in favour of a y-block. I just cant work out why people get rid of a y-block and put in a 302 and c4. A c4 is still only a 3speed gearbox. Personally I would go 3spd column stick shift with overdrive. More old school and rarely seen these days, but the aod is a good option.
great looking car. Go electric wipers. that's what I did with mine.

Pretty EZ to figure out, here in the States you can find 5.0's with an AOD for about the price of the AOD adapter kit and Y-block parts are about triple the cost of 5.0/302 parts plus the 5.0 can be put in 54-59 Fords using stock over the counter mounts. Now you can make it look like a Y-block (see picture below),one of our members can hook you up with adapters to put Y-block valve covers on a 302

Should be no big problem since some 55 fords came with a "Y" block stock.

Could use an FMX auto too, as they are pretty much the same as the Furdomatic that came in the 55s. It is dual range, so it starts in 1st and is a 3 speed auto.

I hear that the front motor mount is not necessary in a car. With the side mounts , I have installed a 292 in a 54 mainline tried to use the front mount off the 239 but the harmonic balancer on the new eng is making contact with the front mount, sparks, should I just toss the front mount ? Will it cause problems later on if not there?
