Couple of questions. Anyone ever changed the main seal on a 292/312 while still in the car? Got the pan down tonight but that was it before I ran out of daylight. What am I in for? Also went to 3 parts stores to buy gaskets and seals, all I could find was a rope replacement for the main. Went ahead and ordered it but does anyone know where I can come up with the neopreme replacement I have read about? Will a get a good seal with a new rope type? Lotsa questions...need some HELP! Thanks

If it's a 292 you can find a neoprene seal, if 312 your stuck with the rope seal. I had heard a rumor that someone was making a neoprene seal for the 312's. Anybody know?

Check out www.ford-y-block.com , John Mummert has a bunch of performance Y block parts and a ton of info as well.

Mummert has the 312 neoprene seal. They are made by Best Gasket. They work real well, but kind of spendy $50 some bucks. Its a split seal so it can be put in with the crank in place. Hope that helps.

you can try WWW.store.partsdinosaur.com I have delt with him for y-block and was cheap and fast. You probably don't have time to wait with the pan down but parts sourcing lists are always good!

If you haven't removed the pan yet, I understand that you have to get the motor at top dead center in order to get it off. Otherwise it will not clear everything (suspension/counterweights).
