Hot Rods Y-Block owners question ?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by hd1084, Aug 31, 2020.

  1. Replacing intake manifold gaskets with a question. I wanted to block off the exhaust port to eliminate the paint burning issue and use a electric choke. The gasket set I received has metal inserts but they have a 1/2 inch hole in them. How will this work and can you buy gaskets that have a total block off ? Thanks for any help in advance.

Shim stock will work to block the exhaust passages. How much are you planning on using this during cold weather?

If the ports are round I have seen pennies, dimes and welch plugs used to block the ports off.

You don’t need to do it. The ones you bought are for trucks and you need some heat in the manifold for efficiency. What you need to do is wire open the butterfly flapper on the right side exhaust manifold or better yet buy one of the eliminators which will eliminate any leaks from the shaft in it.
The open pipe on that side will keep 90% of the exhaust gassed from burning the paint. Mine showed no burning. The Ford red engine paint is good for 500* and before I changed to an aluminum manifold the paint always looked good.

Jimmy six has it right. Works fine. Or just shim stock as already stated.

  9. I believe (being from the St.Louis area) that a Budweiser can would work the best.

Steel or aluminum won't last go with stainless only needed on one side.
