Hot Rods Y-Block powered D/GR (Gas Roadster) for Bonneville

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by mctim64, Aug 5, 2018.

  1. At last after seven years of pushing pickups on the salt it's time to change up the game a bit. The only way I was going to get my Unibody LSR over 200 was with a bigger, different style engine (385 series was the plan and may still happen in the future) but being know for Y-Blocks I figured I would go with a smaller, more aerodynamic car with my pickup engine. This year will be a sorting out and licensing up year with a new car and next year we go for the big number. The engine in the car is one that had been sitting around and waiting for a chance to run again. It was once in the Dragster and ran a best of 10.21 sec @ 130 mph. We hope to get 175 out of the roadster this year. Wish us luck and God speed, we will be working hard for this. Cheers!

After seeing a photo of the roadster in your shop I was hoping you could get it ready with a Y-Block for this year... It had to be a lot of work especially with paint and all. I'll be watching your times to see the 175+at the 2-1/4 mile so you can put the 175 qualified decal on the car for the long course. Even if you never use it for a lot of us it is a true badge of honor.
    Great work Tim.....

  9. Don't worry, if I get it I will use it. I hope 175+ is in the cards, this is a good engine but it's not the "big money" one. Just like with the pickup the first year is spent getting the vehicle ready to run, the next year is when the time goes into the engine. Roadster is a new realm for me, I have great respect for the car and want to treat it right. No spins. ;)

Must be my IPad , looking forward to seeing the hard charging Y block run ,but I get continuous sounds a tease, but no image ,weird.Click the arrow to play and the image disappears and screen goes black , all I hear is a particularly nasty Y block .

  13. I appreciate your comment about no spins. If you have enough weight, I believe you will be good. :) May the fickle racing gods smile on you! :)

  14. Thank you! As a "tail wheel" pilot I am well aware of "Ground looping". They say that there are those that have and those that will. Balance is everything.

  15. Running down my checklist right now! Can we go yet?

  19. Speed Week Report!

Back home safe from Bonneville, we had a great time. This being a "shake down" year with a new car I ran it with just a street engine pulled from another car. I was hoping for a speed nearing 175 mph but the best we could manage was 154.8 mph. Still not too shabby for a 10.5:1 engine with cast pistons and average parts. We made four passes all above 152 mph and the engine was in one piece and ready to run again when it went on the trailer. (no small feat in LSR) The car accelerated well through third gear but the engine just couldn't pull top gear above 5100 rpm. The last pass with a few adjustments the car pulled very hard through the gears, it shows on the time slip from mile one through mile two, but alas in fourth the rear gears are just too tall for the HP/Torque of this engine. New engine was already in the works before we headed out but this year was about getting acquainted with the car. I like it a lot, handles well and is ready to go faster next year. Thank you all for fallowing along. Cheers!

  20. Great seeing ya and the new ride this year Tim.... We had a blast this year racing even with our spin out at 203 mph. Just some minor damage to the right door. We will return next year with the same car, but lot's of up grades to it. Your new roadster is killer dude...

Congratulations @mctim64 on your adventures in going fast in vintage tin...your a natural fit for this stuff. I've snooped around through your videos on YouTube and build threads here.

Pretty amazing accomplishments despite coming up short of where you want to be.

Thanks for sharing your climbing to the top.

That Facebook video no worky for me either but all the YouTube stuff no problems...perhaps you can port it over that way.

One other thing...your camera work is great as it really puts us right there looking forward with you...

  23. Congratulations. A lot of the time it's what you didn't do that is important. Making consistent runs speaks loudly to me. :)

From the video I could here the need for different gearing, but you also had 3 miles instead of the 1.3 at El Mirage.
You also kept it straight, which is great
